that looks like it to me. What is the problem? Where did you get the switch?

Mine was rectangular also. Just wire the two together and call it a day. That switch used to drive me nutz

there is no continuity when the button is not pressed. (open circuit)
there is continuity when it is pressed (0 ohms resistance). (closed circuit)

is this how the switch is supposed to function. i thought it would be the other way around.

its fine.....

they probably do that just so that you can't splice the wires together and bypass the switch without extra work.

i recently realized how it mounted up. there are the 2 eyelets in the back of the clutch pedal housing where the switch slips into and a small spring slips into a small hole in the back locking it into place. the button faces toward the driver so that when he/she presses the pedal it will contact the switch giving the starter solenoid a complete circuit so that you can start it.

now if only i could figure out how to hook up this purple wire and tan wire to the switch. is there someway to solder it?

So you could rig the button somewhere else hidden as a Security feature so you were the only one to know how to start the car?

Sure. In essence, you would just be relocating the clutch safety switch.
