Pinion Seal

I was changing my Pinion Seal over the weekend everything went smoothly except the Diff Yoke or Companion Flange is not flush with the housing. I wasn't sure if it was flush when i took it off there is like a 1/8" of a space between the two. I don't want to use the Pinion Nut to make it flush cause i don't want to overtighten it. I was just wondering if someone could stick there head under the car and let me know. Also if i buy a new Yoke can i put the new one on anyway i want or do i have to put it on in relation with the old one???? Thanks in advance..

There should be a gap between it and the housing.
Why do you want to replace it? What is wrong with yours?
I hope you did not overtighten it.

I have a slight vibration. I was going to try and replace the yoke and the u-joint at the same time and see if that gets rid of the problem.

I think you should get a new crush sleeve and reset the rear end if you are going to change the yoke.

On a side note:
I've heard that the crush sleeve in the rear is bad, and that replacing it with a correct size solid unit is better for the life of the rear or the driveshaft yokes, etc. Anyone else have info on this?

Do a search in here and the advanced forum and you will find some good info.

FWIW, I believe that in order to go to a solid spacer you need a crush sleeve from the rearend that was set up properly to measure so you can set the length of the solid spacer. If you are changing yokes, then the measurement would likely be different.

Ahh, that would make perfect sense since taking a measurement from a new crush sleeve would be completely wrong. Thanks, I'll do a search.

a new yoke will have NO effect on the pinion spacer/crush sleeve... the yoke sits on the outside of the bearing, the spacer is inbetween the bearing and the gear itself... that relationship doesn't change, the only relationship that may change is the location of the washer and nut on the threads pinion gear.

I can't say that I am 100% sure that changing the yoke on the rear will or will not change the preload.

I do know that there were a couple of comprehensive threads about solid spacers not too long ago though.
