Clearancing the rods for cam
Clearancing the rods for cam
I am having a short block (383) built w/ eagle forged 4340 crank, eagle 4340 forged h-beam rods, and -5cc srp flat top pistons. I am wondering from other people using the same rods, did you have to have them clearanced for large cams (like .620 lift w/1.6RRs)? Just wanna make sure I have it done if it is necessary. Thanks
Re: Clearancing the rods for cam
I am interested in the same thing, I have a 383 in the works myself, 4340 eagly crank, hbeam rods too. My cam is in sig, .545/.555 lift. I was told that you should be more worried about the inner diameter of the cam, and not the lobes themselves. The machine shop that cleaned my block said the inner diameter needs to be for a 383, havent called comp yet to see if my cam will work; maybe that is next if no one replies here.
Re: Clearancing the rods for cam
Yeah its usually the back side of an exhaust lobe that comes the closest. The only real way to find out is to mock up the engine and turn it over, grind where needed. The clearancing should be done BEFORE you have it balanced.
In my case with eagle I beam rods I needed no clearancing, and on the other hand a guy here used the same rods as me and had to remove a little.

Re: Clearancing the rods for cam
on my 383 build my engine shop has to clearence the rod abit on the side, it was hittting the lobes on my cam. I went with callies 5.7" compstar rods and a custom cam from bret bauer. I also went with a callies dragonslayer crank and the rear of the block had to be notched for the counter weight, all common stuff with a 383/396 build. some have issues some dont...all depends on what parts you use, its not a bad thing that you mite need clearence
Re: Clearancing the rods for cam
Ya may have to get a small base circle cam AND clearence the rods. If ya don't get a small base cam(.950) made on a billet core, ya may have to grind the rods to much and weaken the to the point of breaking under RPM's. UGLY MESS.
Ya should let your machine shop do it 'cause they have probably done more than one rod/set and know where to grind and how much.

Re: Clearancing the rods for cam
Actually I just talked to them, cam is ground on a .940 base circle, and they said that we would just go ahead and use the k-cut h-beams as they are already clearanced for a 4" stroke. any experience with these?
Re: Clearancing the rods for cam
hey bret, what about the 230/236 XE Comp cam? I dont know the base diameter... should I call comp and make sure its the .95" diameter? Does this even matter since the lift is so small?
