Question Crane 10308 spring kit for LT1s

For those who have installed the Crane Spring kit for alum headed LTs (W/ P/N 99893 dual springs), are they a direct install with no other modifications (i.e. seat change, machining)? I thought I heard a comment once that the seats/seals would need to be changed.

What has been your experience with these springs? Do you recommend them?

Every place I've talked to says they fit stock heads.

Well the only issuses i have had with them were the seats. They just come with shims to replace the stock seats. But the problem is the shims let the spring walk around on the heads a high rpms. I had bought some seats for them and had them machined so i could sill achieve the right spring pressures. I would recomend you change the valve seals also just for some added insurance they are only $10. HTH

I'm running the 10308 spring kit on stock heads. As previously mentioned, the stock seats are to be replaced with the 10308-supplied "seats" which are really "shims". Using these enabled me to obtain the correct installed height, but I really don't like the idea. They just seemed flimsy for "seats". I must admit that I haven't had any trouble with them, at least not that I can tell. As far as the springs "walking"...I'm not sure, but I'm not reving past the stock limits anyway.

Replacing the valve seals is definitely good advice. Also, make sure whatever spring compressor you plan to use will be able to grab and compress both springs in the 10308 kit. I had to mod the one I had so the inner spring wouldn't pop loose while compressed.

In addition, I had Crane 1.6 RRs and had to grind on them a bit. They were rubbing on the outer edge of the spring retainer. I hear some folks have this problem, while others don't.

Hope this helps,
RobY

Mineral, Joe and RobY thanks for the replies.

What brand spring compressor works with dual springs? I have a Lisle brand spring compressor. It worked ok with single spring and dampner, but I don't know about duals

Does anyone have a recommendation on brand/type of valve seal to use?

It sounds like you've had good experience with the Crane springs. I think I'll try them. Any other comments or advice?

I'm not sure which brand spring compressor will work. I used whatever one I could find locally and modified it to work (out of despiration).

I used Crane valveseals. I hadn't ever had any problems with the stockers though.

Thanks, Rob. I might just try the Crane seals. I think I'll start a new thread on the spring compressor to get others comments.

Anyone else have experience with the Crane 10308 spring kit?

I have used the craftsman OHV spring compressor. Good part and only cost about $15 works well on the dual crane springs. YOu can get them at Sears.

Thanks, Joe, I might take a look at it at Sears to see if it is similar to the one I have before I tear into the engine only to find it may or may not work.

Don, I have 10308-1 springs. Do yourself a huge favor, and get stock L98 spring seats. They fit perfectly inside the inner spring, and prevent the 10308's from walking on the head. I have the L98 seats on my ride and ZERO spring walk. Plus, the seats are cheap.

These are far superior to the cheap-@ss shims supplied by Crane. It's a wonderful convenience the L98 seats work, and very well.

What is the part number for the L98 seats? How much do they cost?

Thanks for the tip, Ed. Did you actually have a problem with the springs walking with the 10308 kit's shims/seats or did they simply look cheap as compared to the L98's shims/seats? In other words, what caused you to forget the 10308 kit's shims and go with the L98's. Can you explain in more detail how they are different? I'm on a limited budget and need new springs.

I'd like to know where too, since I've got those springs waiting to go on soon.

I personally didn't have problems with spring walk because the L98 seats were installed right off the bat. Many people have been successful with the shims, many haven't. The L98 seats, with their lip that fits perfectly into the inner spring of the 10308-1, is cheap insurance. I don't have the GM part number anymore, sorry.

DaveW might be able to give you some first-hand experience. I know this was discussed in detail about 2 years ago - when I installed my cam / heads.

Anyone else have info for Don??
