Cleaning the 96 opti-spark distributor

Okay, my car had some misfiring issues. I changed the entire ignition side, except the ditributor itself, because the previous owner said "I changed the distributor a month ago"

WELL, the intake manifold gasket has a leak, and oil ran down the engine and got into the distributor... replacing the gasket soon and wanted to know how to/if I could clean the distributor and it's optical lense, and how i might further avoid any future oil leak issues on the distributors behalf.

If you have suggestions, or know hows, please help this guy out.

Thanks,
Shivo

have you removed the opti and opened it up? Unless the seal is garbage I doubt any oil got in there. Its a pretty tight system, unless submerged or the seal is carbonized I dont see this happening.(is said cap war just replaced they come with new seals ect... I can post picks if you need a better visual.

Id make sure all the plug wires are connected and none of the insulation is broken from either inside the plug ends and also just the wires them self. Have u looked under your hood while its idling at night? See arching? Do you have an illuminated CEL?

well, if the misfiring isn't the distributor, I was told it'd be the fuel regulator... since I've changed the entire ignition side. no arching in the dark. I'm assuming it's the distributor, because two out of three mechanic friends have said it's that because of the small oil leak I have. I haven't taken out the distributor yet and opened it yet, planning on doing it friday, and hoping to have some do's and don'ts by then.
