Changing pinion bearing, HELP!!
Ok, I decided today to replace my pinion seal (because it was leaking) and at the same time change the pinion bearing (because I've had this massive noise coming from the rear, and thought this might fix it). This is on a moser 12 bolt by the way. I took the driveshaft off, got the nut and flange out as well (had to use a puller for the flange). I was even able to get the seal out! My question is, how the hell do I pull the bearing out?Is it pressed in there? If so, do I need a special tool? I tried pliers but they're just not doing it. I hope I dont have to get to it from the front of the differential! Any info will help, thanx!!
If it's like a regular differential, you need to pull the carrier and drive the pinion out. Usually a deadblow hammer works, put the pinion nut back on to protect the threads. There is a bearing and race behind the flange (tail bearing) and one pressed on up near the pinion gear (head bearing). The head bearing is pressed onto the pinion and should have a shim behind it. The race is pressed into the housing and can be removed with a long punch driving from the flange end. The tail bearing will come off as soon as the pinion is free from the housing. The race needs to be driven out from the carrier side with a long punch. This one should be removed before the head bearing race is removed. Good luck.
