Changing my thermostat to 160*

My car has been getting hot. Seems like the thremostat is sticking. So I was wondering if I change the thermostat to a 160* one will it cause any problems with anything?

I switched to a 160 stat and never had a problem. As far as I know this is pretty common among many LT1 owners and I've never heard of any negative side effects.

Re: Changing my thermostat to 160*

No, it'll be fine, but to get full benefit of it you'd want a pcm tune to go with it. I have my fans set for 180/190 with mine, and in mid summer traffic I've never seen it go over 195 at idle. In the cool weather its usually 165-170.

I almost feel it doesn't get quite warm enough to heat the oil properly during short trips. Though it is perfectly fine.

Re: Changing my thermostat to 160*

It will take longer for the car to heat up in the winter time, so if that's a concern then just swap in a new OEM.

This is my experience with the car in my signature. 160 thermostat installed. No reprogramming. Temp stays right at 180 all the time. Fans never kick on. Heat works great.

If your car is getting hot,you should get the system flushed(check the hoses). The 160 will just burn up your fans quicker. When you do the flush, install a new thermostat.(GM).My02.

If it still gets hot,you may have a clogged radiator.

Re: Changing my thermostat to 160*

I'm pretty sure my thermostat is sticking closed cause the temp goes up to red line then quickly drops down half way to 210* I pulled my opti today so i'm going to put a 160* and see how the temp goes.
