You need to upgrade the stall man. It's no big deal and in fact, it's much easier/quicker to do than a cam! I used a cheap converter from the Oregon Transmissions company that cost about 130 bucks and stalled about 2600. It had lock-up and drove like a stock converter until you hit it. My car with that converter ran 12.08 on DR's. For the money, it just can't be beat! I sold the converter to another guy at the track and he absolutely loves it. It gave him almost 2 1/2 tenths in the quarter over the stock stall.
If you truly want to cam only with no stall, I would highly recommend the Crane 227, or the XE 501 cam.

Do you live close to Dayton? Get that stall from Oregon Transmissions and bring it over here. I'll put it in for $125 bucks in about an hour and a half. Here's my number 937-416-0870. Name is Chris.

Re: Cc503

Also though, I have a warranty on my transmission and it gets voided if I do anything to it, even if I just take it out and put it back in. That is one reason why I want to keep the stock stall. So if the tranny blows up and they notice the stall is not stock, they don't make me pay for the new one.

The reason I do not want the hotcam is cause of the duration. It is really close to the stock LT1 but with more lift. If I can find something with a little more duration and lift, I'll be happy. Hell, I'll be happy with 300rwhp. And I know that isn't hard at all. So any ideas for a cam? I already plan on...

987 springs
743 7* retainers
503 valve seals
601 7* locks
1.6 rockers when I can afford the extra 250.

Re: Cc503

218/228 .525/.525 112 lsa hotcam
202/207 .450/460 116 lsa stock
220/230 .510/.510 114 lsa cc305
there is a bigger difference than you think. it's not a monster but it's a decent upgrade from stock. I think the hotcam would give a better sound from the tighter lsa. so i retract the last post. go hotcam kit. it'll be cheeper than the parts you had listed too.

Re: Cc503

With 1.6 rr the cc305 would have much more lift though, .544/.544.

If you get a higher performance cam which requires an idle higher than stock, this does not quite match what your stock stall & transmission was intended for, correct?

The higher idle with such a low stall is the reason you have to put more pressure on the brakes when at a dead stop. That means more heat in the trans than usual, no? I mean you aren't moving, but the engine is running at a higher rpm than stock. Something's soaking all that up.

Re: Cc503

Yep, comp lists all their **** with 1.5s, probably since that is the stock ratio.

Good point. Although, if I got the hotcam, which is nothing like what I thought it was. I thought it was the actual LT4 cam, which is like 203/205 .474/.480 or something. But, if I have the hotcam, then I could have the idle set roughly close to stock correct? Stock idle once warm is 600-650, atleast it is on my car. If I got the hotcam, would it be bad to set the idle to 750? I know it would lope some to a lot at that, but it would not be that much above stock. So I don't think it would cause the tranny to make THAT much more heat.

Re: Cc503

haha yeah, theres a little difference between the LT4 cam and the LT4 hotcam. I think in your case you would be better off with the hotcam. It will idle lower better, and you can run it with the stock stall. I little stall would help performance wise but not necessary. Plus you will save some bucks. The whole Hot cam kit only costs $525.

$525 with everything? The cam, spings, retainers, locks, and 1.6 rr? That's pretty good. Maybe I will just go with that then. Seems to be my best bet, plus I know I can get the hotcam and whatever from people selling it on here for cheaper too. Thanks guys, everyone has been a big help!

Re: Cc503

can you use a Spec stage 2 clutch with the cc305 and 1.6rr? Should you also change the springs and retainers? the previous owner had the combo in my sig plus the cam and rr and blew the motor. He thinks its cuz he didnt change to a double valve spring and retainers. Right now i have the crapice motor with the shi*** cast iron heads but plan on them getting swapped to ported stock alum. heads

I'd email Ion or Bryan and ask about what recommendations for the idle on the hotcam.

As for the cost of that kit, it's tough to beat that kind of bang for the buck. Not a bad choice, it's a proven performer.
