Re: Cc503

I ran the 503 with a stock stall and 850 idle for about a year.

Yes, a higher stall is more appropriate, but it's not a deal breaker by any means. The only real issue I had was some surging when at a dead stop.

I'd suggest getting a trans cooler too (if you don't already have one), very cheap insurance. Don't wait till you get a higher stall to do this.

Cam surge? Isn't that where the car bucks and chugs and sounds like it is going to die, but doesn't? I suppose if the surge isn't bad I won't have a problem with it. Trans cooler? seems like it is half a dozen and six another with this cam swap. Either spend the money on a transcooler or get a stall. How bad will it toast my tranny if I don't get a transcooler or a stall?

Re: Cc503

Sorry - not cam surge, but when at a dead stop with an 850 idle, the car will want to creep forward a bit. You have to put a little more pressure on the brakes than you would otherwise. That's all it is, no bucking or anything crazy. A higher stall will clear this right up though (did for me).

As for the cooler, it's only $50 or so. A good stall will run you $500+. You may not toast the tranny without a cooler, but you're really much less likely to with a cooler.

i have yet to have a problem with my car surging at all..i have a madz28 tune and havent had any tuning issues..you can check out my dyno chart for the accuracy of the tune. it just lopes a bit at idle..so the car rocks a bit at idle..but not surge.

as far as the gears go, i had 3.23..and it seemed relatively sluggish downlow..but that could be because compared to around 3500+ rpms..it really took off and rev'ed fast..so it could have been a false SOTP feeling.

When i put the gears in..it REALLY woke it up. the power felt good all over the band..even in the auto dead spots it pulled alot harder.

I dont think your tranny will toast if you dont get a trans cooler and use your stock stall with just a cam. the trans cooler just keeps your tranny a bit cooler(obviously)..and that in turn will prolong tranny life..it will not add any performance...its also pretty cheap. the stall is what your going to need the tranny cooler for.

If anything, i would do the stall + tranny cooler before you did your cam swap.

Re: Cc503

If I can help it, I would rather not do a stall or a cooler. The "cheap insurance" thing could be said in almost any situation. What does everyone think of the cmotorsports cam?

TN-221XL 221/227 .508/.525 112 LSA

Think that will need a stall? It doesn't list an RPM range. The duration isn't too far off from the cc503 so I was just wondering, it just has a little more lift. Here are basically the cams I am looking at...

TN-221XL 221/227 .508/.525 112 LSA
cc503
zz409...I think 225/225 .525/.525 112 LSA
cc305

Which one would be best if I don't want a stall, or cooler. Springs and what not I already have planned out. I plan on keeping the 1.5 rockers just to save money for now. What will milage be roughly? I don't want something that is going to suck my gas from 20-22mpg to 10mpg. It is my every other day driver.

Re: Cc503

Now I think I'm in love with the 503. Now I just gotta figure out how to tell my wife. I can't wait to get this beast done. Its going to kick ***!

Shibby, I really couldn't reccomend a cam since this is my first experience with em but most cams are listed with 1.6 rockers. The lift figures may be a little lower than what you're seeing. Do you plan on racing your car?

Re: Cc503

No I don't plan on racing it. I doubt it will ever see a track. Maybe in the very distant future. I heard of people breaking 350rwhp with a hotcam, but then I've also seen people not even get 300. So I really don't know which cam to go with. Maybe the 503 is my best bet. Don't NEED a stall or cooler, yet still makes plenty of power. hmmm

Re: Cc503

You should be able to make about 300 off of bolt ons I believe. If not very close.(I haven't had any dyno time just hp calculators) If they are not making 300 with the hotcam then they need a tune and supporting mods. What's the main factor in you wanting a cam? Power or sound?

Lloyd Elliot said with my set up, cc503, and his heads (270/190 205 intake port) it should lay down 375ish or possibly up to 395-400.

Re: Cc503

That makes me feel bad. My heads only flow 249/174 @ .400 and 259/183 @ .500 and I was looking to make 370rwhp. I guess I won't make it.

Re: Cc503

Check out LLoyds head thread in this forum. He explains that flow numbers aren't really what they seem. Same way with horsepower relating to e.t. The whole car needs to be accounted for.

Not meaning to put you down or anything but why do the cam if you are not going to race it? If that's not the case and you still want a cam I would say the Hot cam then. It would cost you a lot less and would work better with the stock stall. I like the CC503 better but from what I'm gathering, I think you might be more suited for the Hot cam

Re: Cc503

How much do you think the CC503 would make over the Hotcam with decent flowing heads?

What he said. Except it doesn't matter about the heads for me. What I want a cam for is the power and sound. Ok maybe I wasn't serious about not racing. I would like to.

I will be happy with 350rwhp/325rwtq. What will get me there, a hotcam, 1.6 rockers, and a tune? I really doubt the full hotcam kit gets the 425 advertised horsepower. I want some lope though too, so people know it isn't stock without me having to tell them.

I doubt you will get 350 rwhp with just a cam and and auto. you would probably need a big cam to get there..and that would be pushing it. you would probably make it with a hotcam and ported heads..and definalty make it with a cc503 and good ported heads.
