recomendations/driveability questions cc306 and cc503 cams
OK, I can't makeup my mind on cams...I settled on two but still can't make up my mind. I was looking atthe cc305 but found a cc503 in Summit that's a little more aggressive but notas aggressive as the cc306...
cc306 hydraulic roller (290HR-12)
290/307 230/244
.510"/.540" 112 LSA
cc503 Hydraulic roller (276HR-12)
276/281 224/230
.503"/.510" 112 LSA
Both are made for LT1's. My car has an LT1 intake but it's a TPI motor...HT383 shortblock, ported aluminum heads with guideplates and 7/16" studs, springs, SLP 1 3/4" headers, 24# SVO's (255 lph in-tank)and a six speed. I have an LT4 hotcam but I want something a bit more aggressive.
Any driveability problems with the cc306 or cc503?
What is your fuel mileage like (just to get an idea, I still want to be able to drive it more than 10 miles at a time)?
Is it a streetable cam or a little too aggressive for use a few times a week?
Any help in helping me choose which one to use would be greatly appreciated.
If this doesn't work I might just put my rotating assembly and cam in my '93 motor and put THAT in!

CC306 dude!
I have a "derivative" from GTP in mine. I have the full LT1 under my intake
Anyway, advertised #s are....
235/242 .568/.592 114 on mine.
They wouldn't give any other numbers because they didn't want other shops to copy it. But it is basically a CC306 with 1.6 rockers and less steep ramps so I can spin it up higher with less chance of floating the lifters. But I also have good springs and an AFR hydra-rev kit to make sure it stays tight.
As yet I have not gotten it perfectly tuned...ran it pig rich all last Fall and tore it apart in May. It is coming back together as we speak. But I averaged.......maybe ~12 mpg with a 2800 stall and 3.73s. Not a clue what it is putting to the wheels, but all the 4th gen guys with this particular head/cam kit are making 395-415rwhp depending on tune and compression. I am only running 9.3:1 so I expect to be on the low side. But I built the engine for boost. No the cam is not perfect for a blower.... but its a LOT of fun for now and until/unless I grenade the engine I don't plan to change it.
Put it this way, my buddy Mark or MarkOlc over here... has an LT1 and has the cc306 now. It sounds good, but not as radical as mine. And mine is drivable, no problem. I know that some folks would be picky, but they are the ones that expect a built car like that to drive like a Honda.
And hey, as long as you don't have emissions, the sky's the limit!

I have the CC305 cam in my 93 with heads and 11 to1 comp and it is very streetable, no surging at stoplights and it still has a nice choppy cam idle, I have never Dynoed my car but at the track with pretty much a simular weght and drivetrain as you I run 12.3s @ 112 to 113 mph (car weights 3750 w/me). Also it has plenty of vacuume for the brakes and in the summer it runs the A/C fine. I shift at the track at 6500 rpm with no problems, I'm using the spring kit from crane for the alum headed LT1 with 600 lift.
I tightened the springs up .020 soas to give me a little more pressure but I really dont think that was needed as they put out 130# closed at recomended height and 425# (if I remember right) open. But needless to say both grinds people have had good results with so the cam thats kinda in the middle should be fine.

Still got a question.
How's the idle/vacuum with the 306 or 503 cam? Both of those have 112 LSA's and are a little more aggressive, as the 305 has a 114 and isn't as aggressive. Still looking to use A/C and power brakes. Still considering the LT1 swap as well, but I kinda like the sound of a 383 under the hood.
Thanks for the input!
