my 95Z smokes when it is at idle with an unpleasant odor. It doesnt do it when I accelerate. When I crank it and lets it run it has clean air running from the exhaust because clean evaporated water drips out the tailpipes. I dont know if the intake may have some buildup or the injectors need to be cleaned. The smoke is annoying at stop lights. Any suggestions. I have brand new O2 sensors on it to. The car runs good just smokes at idle at times.

 

What color is the smoke, blue, black or white?

 

I dont have a Cat Converter just straight back from headers. The smoke is regular color grayish. But it doesnt leave oil residue on my bumper so it cant be nothing oil related.

When you notice the "smoking" what is the temp when its doing this? When its cool out especially if you dont have cats you will tend to see thenatural water vapor from the exhaust more often.

If the smell from the exhaust is unpleasant to you, its a product of having no cats, so you should probably put some back on

 

I have the same issue TD with 503 cam I think i may not have put the new valve seals on properly so iam going to do them again , Not sure if you did your when you did the cam also

 

I talked to the person that built the motor said that the PCM was built to run like that. Because of the Cam... It only does it at idle

Yeah that makes no sence at all , The only way a Pcm Could cause smoke is if it forcing to much fuel at idol and washing the cylinders down . But thats not a good thing so i dont think a programmer would do that on purpose

 

Well I got my PCM tuned again and the programmer said it was throwing way more fuel than he is use to tuning at. I think it will forever give an unpleasant smell and light smoke since I have no cat Conv. Like i said it runs strong. Im just going to have to deal with it until something major makes me go thru it again. The motor only have 60,000 miles on it since 2004.

Running rich...Guess it was dropping too much fuel..Its been in the garage because of the bad weather and premium gas going up.. Runs way different now cuz the timing was way off too maybe to get more hp

So he just left it idling very rich, and didn't attempt to diagnose or correct the problem?

Somebody tuned it the first time to produce smoke on idle, and set the timing "way off" to get more HP? This can't be serious.

You're going to just keep running it with the idle so rich that it's pouring out stinking smoke, not really concerned that it may be washing down the cylinder walls and possibly damaging the rings???????

 

Fuel usually produces black smoke, if it's a rich condition. Smoke at idle usually indicates bad valve guide seals, especially if it smokes real heavy on cold start.

 

I'm thinking the owner before me got all that stuff done to the PCM and I'm just correcting it. It was jacked up..Just picking up the pieces
