Can't get nuts off ARP head studs

The nuts in the very front and the rear are impossible to get a socket on (5/8 deep, six point). The socket hits the spring where it sits on the head, and I don't think it would go on even if the springs were removed. I'll be grinding down a socket today to try to get it think enough to fit on there. AFR 190 heads, but I think the situation would be the same with any head. This has been an unwelcome little surprise.
By the way, when torquing the heads back down, should I just follow the standard pattern and steps from Haynes? 65 ft-lbs final torque?
I bought this car from a member here Camaro_SS/R about 6 weeks ago. It's been quite a story and I'm not happy about it at all. I'll post the whole thing when I find out what's wrong with it. Something came apart and the only thing left on the car to take apart is removing the heads.

Oh, also, will I be able to get the heads off the studs with the engine in the car?

edit: We tried various brands of sockets to find one thin enough to get in there and none would fit. Then we found a spark plug socket with built in extension that fit. Only other option is to grind a socket until it will fit. Also, you can get the heads off in the car; you might have to pull the studs out first though; I don't remember, it was a while ago. :edit
