cam install question

cam install question

i just put a 305 cam in my 95 lt1 went to put the opti back on and notticed the 1-6 mark on the back of the opti when i line up the dowel pin on the cam to the opti it's at the number six mark but i am at top dead center my question is is my cam in 180 off or are the marks on the opti wrong please help

are you sure your at TDC for #1 piston, if the pointer arrow on the harmonic ballancer was set straight up at 12 o clock you could end up with either 6 TDC piston or number one. If the dimples on the chain gears are both pointed at 12 o clock then your at number one if the crank is at 12 and cam at 6 then your at #6 dead center so then from there you can determine where to put the pin at. when the engine was turned over to TDC the number one cylinder rockers should not have moved, they should be at closed valve position. Of course if you have the cam off now with rockers off this may not help you, but you may have noticed this before disassemble. Let me know if this is confussing or not, sounds like you were at number 6 TDC
