I went through that nightmare too, and I still have gone out of it. I'll tell you what, if that engine only starts with the gas pedal pressed, than it mostly is that you are running pig rich which will bog your engine down at lower rpms.

The PCM goes into "Clear Flood" mode when the gas pedal is pressed and your crank the engine. Check your plugs to verify their condition. I assure you that they will most likely be pitchblack. Pull #1.

You can make it run by adjusting the minum idle air screw, but it is only a temporary solution at best. The PCM will dump more fuel as soon as your MAF senses more air going in, and your IAC position values will go wacko and cause mucho surging / hesitation.

I to date have not been able to enjoy my car, but I am thinking that I have either tuning problems or a mechanical problem, such as installing the cam one tooth off. I have a Cloyes True Roller, but engine was not assemble by me, and I now will verify all possible causes.

About the opti, at first my cam destroyed my original opti because Comp Cams does not adjust them for you. Comp Cams leaves up to the user to verify dowel length. I did not, and I paid the price. I used a air grinder to grind it out a notch and the new opti now sits flat. Also check your opti harness, are they are prone to corrosion.

Good Luck

If you're using a cloyes chain it doesn't line up at 6 and 12, it lines up at 12 and 12.

When using a Cloyes True Roller, then if the timing marks are to remain at 12 and 12, where will the cam point to?

This is my problem, because when I asked my engine builder, he alingned the timing marks at 6 and 12. go figure!!!!

The OEM chain is the normal 6 and 12 as far as I know.

I didn't know this information when we were putting mine in, so we just spent some time watching the lifters and turning the cam. And it just turned out that 12 and 12 had the lifters going the right way for the post TDC stroke.

I've been involved in 3 of them now, all 12 and 12.

Heck my new motor's getting finished off now, it's 12 and 12. Guess that's #4. =)

You can line it up either way 12 to 12 or 12 to 6 for the cloyes chain. The crank gear has an advance and retard slotted in to it. The O should be positioned so it is pointing up if you want no additional advance. The 12 and 6 is a standard way for lining up the gears because it is much easier to tell if they are not aligned properly.
