Cam install difficulty

Just wondering about the difficulty of a cam swap. I have done everything in my sig myself with the exception of the gears. Will i be able to swing a cam swap?

I did a search but i failed to come accross a clear answer.

Thanks

Re: Cam install difficulty

It is not so much difficult as time taking. You have to take your time and do it correctly. (which means keep it very clean and torque everything to specifications) Make sure to use plenty of cam/assembly lube on the camshaft before you install it. Remove the old one and install the new one slowly and carefully (rotating it clockwise while pulling/installing) so that you don't score the bearings.
There are several websites put together which you can use as guidelines. A shop manual is also a good idea.

Exactly. I don't think there is anything that is really hard, just time consuming. The only speciality work that needs to be done is having the AC recharged because any time i've done a cam install you'll end up having to disconnect the line to get the condenser to move. Other than that the only "difficult part" can be to install and remove the cam. It can just be kind of difficult if you've never done one before. The last thing you want to do is hurt a bearing.

Re: Cam install difficulty

yeah im worried about those bearings. i suppose a plus is that AC is deleted already.

Another question for you guys.... i have 130,000 miles on my Z, how quick will a heads/cam setup such as Lloyd Elliot's LE1 package, kill my engine? RIght now it runs perfect with no weird noises, and no oil consumption.

You want to risk that?

I guess it really depends on how well the engine has been serviced over it's lifetime. If synthetic oil was used from the beginning then there should be very little internal wear. With the LE1 package if you keep the redline to 6100-6200 RPM you should be fine.

Re: Cam install difficulty

If ya have never done a cam change ya need to ask someone who has (good mechanic not backyard) to give ya a hand as there is a lot to screw up if ya don't know what to look at or for.

Re: Cam install difficulty

You could have it done in a weekend if you plan it right and have a buddy help you out. Things that took me the longest was the Hub and changing springs.
