cam and computer?

i did a search on this and found nothing,im considering a mild cam swap in my LT1 and headers.i was talking about it with a friend and he said im crazy if i do it, he claims that the factory tuning will not accept this kind of mod.he said he changed rear gears and his computer went crazy he said its because the computer in these cars are very sensitive and its hard to do mods like this.so do i have to get the computer reprogrammed to work with a new cam?

Re: cam and computer?

It'll run without a tune, but you'll probably want to tune it as the spark advance for the new Cam will probably be more/less agressive in different spots.
Gears throw the "computer" off since its used to calculate speed, which is used by the computer in an A4 to determine shift points. If changing the gearing, tire diameter, transmission, you always need to be sure the computer knows the changes or your speedo will be off and your shifts may be messed up. Its not going crazy, just action on what its been told to do

Yeah, it would probably be in your best interest to get a tune just to maximize performance. And like he said, of course gears will throw it off, DUH.

Re: cam and computer?

Don't bother swapping parts unless youy are willing to do at least a mailorder tune, but not because of the reasons your friend gave. The car will run probably decently with the stock tune and a cam but you will be leaving a lot of power on the table. Look at it this way would you cam a carbed car without rejetting the carb or resetting the timing, well not reprogramming a computer controled car is the same thing. It is actually pretty amazing how tolerant this pcm can be one of the guys on the b-body forum recently posted numbers at over 600RWHP and almost 700RW TQ, needless to say he has done a few mods, but has also had the pcm reprogrammed to work with them.

Contact PCMforless or Madwolf here on the boards, they offer mail order tunes that are very accurate and will offer great power gains with your cam.

Also Ed Write out of Tulsa Oklahoma (close to my house ) Does the mail order call him at 918-446-3019 You'll talk to John but they can get you a good tune and will also do upgrades for you later after you've changed your mind and want a gm847 or a cc306!! And Trust me you'll want bigger
Good luck

Re: cam and computer?

Ed is good but Madwolf and pcmforless can produce the same results at a fraction the price. As far as wanting a bigger cam, honestly I think most of the f-body crowd overdoes it(as do many b-body guys) isn't one of the quicker cammed cars a 227 cam and the 845/227/ZZ3 cams all do well in the b-body and those are 208-14 on the intake mild but very good performers.

Re: cam and computer?

Yes those are good cams But then that all depends on what you want! I went with the 306 cam because I am running nitrous and a mild cam is not what runs well on nos!! if you are just wanting a great street performer then the 845 or even the 227 are good but if you plan on some good track times and great street performance then the bigger the better. I have yet to see too many b-bodies get in the 9's and 10's with those smaller cams.
