Bunch of questions hot cam vs. cc306!

I have a 93 z28 with 3.73's and mac mid headers and i want to do a cam swap but i dont know which one is for me. I know the hot cam can be bought for $500 but how much is the cc306 with 1.6rr, valve springs and retainers??
1. Should i even do a cam i have 55,000 miles or will i spin a bearing?
2. how bad is either cam on gas mileage?
3.I THINK the hot cam does low 13's and cc306 with stock heads does high 12's is that correct?
4.ABout how much will this cost to instal?
5. What other things should i do when doing a cam swap. Already want to do high flow oil pump, and double timing chain. Any others?
IF some can anwser all of my questions it will be a HUGE help! So i really want 12 second car on a budget. But i also dont want the hot cam and wish i went bigger so help me decide. This is my daily driver! THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP!

Dont know what cam you should get but I know the hotcam got me into the 12s NA with stock heads and some midlength headers. Depends on what weight and traction you have. Hotcam has been good enough for mid 120's mph passes on a n20 shot too, and not a big baller shot at that. CC306 is a good cam too, probably gives you more room to move up in power if you do head work later.

edit: O yeah, I get over 25mpg on the thruway with 3.42 and a 6 speed, running probably somewhat rich. Over 15 around town beating on it quite a bit.

If your looking for a comprimise between the hotcam and the cc306 then i would reccomend the cc305. It is just a little bit bigger then the hotcam and is good with nitrous if u ever plan on using it. As for the hotcam vs. the cc306, the latter is a top end cam, so if u want most yuor power to be above 3,000 rpm then i reccomend it.

To answer your question starting from top to bottom. Yes I would put a cam in at your current mileage. No you wont spin a bearing as long you dont rush and put the cam in gingerly. gas mileage depends on how you drive the car, of course if your a m6 you'll be alot better but if your an a4 with a bigger converter then you'll feel it in the pockets for sure, but hey you didnt buy the car for its great gas mileage . As far as times go, it mostly depends on the driver, Ive seen stock head's hot cam cars go pretty far in the 12's and 306's even better but it depends on the mods and who driving and wether its a m6 or a4. Do the cam swap your self, if your not familiar with your car this is a great way to get in touch with her and you'll learn something in the process. But if you absolutely want to have your car done by a mechanic expect to pay around 500-700 dollors+oil and coolant. Now unless your dropping the motor you wont be able get to oil pump and replace it unless you have a tubular k-member. but the double timign chain is fine if you have the money for it. But to be honest I hear far too many people say they wish they wint with somethig bigger then the hot cam.

I am thinking i MIGHT go with the hot cam b/c it will be a ton cheaper. Should i be worried about spining a bearing?? If i do go through with this what kinda timing chain, oil pump, and push rods are you guys using b/c if i do a cam i will change this at the same time.

Its in the oil pan. I think you can do it in car, but you have to unbolt the motor mounts and jack the motor up several inches to get the pan off.

Re: Bunch of questions hot cam vs. cc306!

unbolt the mounts, take off the starter, oil cooler if you have one, and trans scatter sheild, take the y pipe off, the car i did it on had mac mid lengths, if you have long tubes you will have to unbolt them from the heads, i used a hoist, raise the engine up as far as it will go, take the bolts out, smack the pan and it will fall on the ground.

oh, make sure you drain the oil first.

The cc305 is pretty much just a hotcam. Its just cheaper and easier to buy the hotcam kit because the cc305 is the samething but 2x's as much. I would say more of a middle ground cam would be like the 224/230 or 227/233. You really have two totall diff cams listed you have one really mild cam and one pretty "radical" cam. The times you run with the cam is really more dependent on driver, traction, and weight. Hp would be a good comparision.

Re: Bunch of questions hot cam vs. cc306!

I got the hotcam kit and put it in myself. I had not worked on an engine any time before that. I installed mine with just over 100,000 miles and have had it for 20,000 and have not had any problems. I have 4.10's now and still get 25 MPG on the highway. I also got the times in my sig.
