? on cam bearings...

Ok, if I pull out the stock cam and see that mine are really worn, can I just put the stock cam back in? Is it possible to change them out while in the car?

You'd have to pull the tranny and pop a freeze plug to get to the back cam bearing and its not worth the trouble, easier to lift the car out of the engine bay and replace them there.

I wouldn't, you know its messed up, just a matter of time before you have to pull it out and put new ones in anywyas. Your already there, why not? The tool is like $40, cam bearings are $15, rent a cherry picker for a day for $75 and just lift it out of the car to replace them. Your asking for trouble if you just put it back IMO.

not to mention that it would be really hard to get the front four out in the car. even if you remove the shroud, radiator and condensor, there's still not a heck of alot of room to get the tool in correctly. and if you can tell that they are worn without giving them a thorough inspection with the engine out, then they are way past there usage life. just my thoughts....

You would have to remove the engine to do all the cam bearings. If you just stuck the cam back in, it would not be any worse off than what it was before.

i agree with shoebox, you would have to pull the motor out to replace the cam bearings. I'll check that tool out, the way I've done cam bearings is to take everything apart and tap them in with a wooden hammer. Thats the way we do them all in the shop.

Hi Sean,

Ya I think you could put the stock cam back in but on Matts car when the cam cam out they were so bad there was no point in putting the cam back in.
Its not like I've done a thousand cam swaps but I've done several and his cam didn't want to come out. I have never seen that before so If the cam doesn't want to come out easy leave it in.

What are you looking to put in and how soon? want any help?
