Well, I went back and talked to them and let them look at the bearings. He said that the marks/scratches were from him test fitting a camshaft to make sure it spun freely. He looked over, and felt, every one of them and said he wouldn't be worried about it. In fact, he said they would polish out.

To his defense, they ARE VERY SOFT! I actually put a gouge in one of them with my fingernail!

So, I guess I'll put it together and if anything bad happens, they'll be seeing me again!

 

Just curious if you had any ill effects from these bearings... I have some pretty soft bearings myself and they have some scratches in the front cam bearing, but i cant catch my nail in it.... Just curious.

 

I plead ignorance (I'm sure you will all concur) however maybe it doesn't make any difference, but if it does, then you are looking at spun bearings and possibly a complete rebuild. Food for thought.JMHO

 

Take the soft bearings out and put in some ACL,Durabond or something like that.

 

You might check other aspects of the build before you decide if you want to keep the engine or get them to fix it. I hope the cam bearings are an isolated case (installed by a FNG as Kevin said). Let's hope the FNG (or F***in' New Guy) didn't do much of the build.

I suggest being firm, but not pissed if you revisit the shop. If you are pissin' and moanin' they will be more interested in getting rid of you than in fixing a problem. I'd also use good bearings as 'dude mentioned. If the cost for them wasn't in the build, tell them you'll pony up for the difference in cost of the bearings if they will install them correctly. If they "test-fit" a cam, either they didn't use much lube or they cleaned everything off well before shipping the engine.

I imagine it is these. Are they any good?

Hey, on a bare block like that, putting a cam in is really easy - You just stand the block on end, butter up the cam, and drop it straight down into the hole. Almost no chance for screwup. So how did they do it that they had it so gouged up like that?

What's the deal on this? I figured this would've been taken care of by now.

 

Those are stock replacements. Fine if you are rebuilding a stock motor but you need something better if it's a hi-po setup.
