buying a 383 stroker kit when i get back from afganistan.
Re: buying a 383 stroker kit when i get back from afganistan.
Forged bottom end
Lower compression
NOT the lt4 that thing is old and too small for a purpose built drag car.
Custom grind to match heads would be good.
Your gonna need a cage in that thing also (at minmal a roll bar)
12 bolt rear or 9 inch
Transmission will hold for a while, but be ready for that to go bye bye soon enough.
Long tube headers

You are asking how to build two different motors. If you are planning on building a supercharged 383, you will have a completely different path to take than building a N/A motor. Boosted SBCs need LOW compression, forged internals, and (ideally) a camshaft designed with boost in mind. A N/A motor does not follow (most) of these guidelines.
Either build a motor designed for boost or build a motor designed to run N/A.
I am going to be honest with you. The second-hand work that your friends will provide will probably yield second-hand results. There is no way a motor can be torn down, rebuilt, and machined with QUALITY in only a weekend.
Seriously...do some searching, find some cars with the ETs/HP numbers you are looking for, see how they reached it and GET THEIR ADVICE. The last thing you can do at this juncture and with your education level is to take advice from friends who have ZERO experience with LT1s. It will only end in disappointment.

One weekend? Anyone who can accomplish this 'the right way' would be way too busy to do it anyway, so it ain't gonna happen. There's a reason machine shops take their sweet time, you can't just throw parts in there and go. Bad things happen when you rush a motor build.
Re: buying a 383 stroker kit when i get back from afganistan.
thanks for the advice guys, and im not rushing into anything. i have untill next year in march to decide what to do. ill take a look into some shops around. theres RPM motorsports in Raleigh and i did a little research but ive never talked to anyone who hase dealt with them before.
i want a supercharged engine and im deffinetly planning on getting a forged 383 kit. im just not going to be able to afford the supercharger with all of these other purchases.
this ****s a little confusing to me but ill get it eventually. like i said i have alot of time to research and im not making any firm decisions now.
keep the advice and criticism comming.
thanks again.

I second what everyone else said.
I also suggest doing business with the least amount of companies as possible, so you don't have people all pointing fingers at each other should something go wrong.
Re: buying a 383 stroker kit when i get back from afganistan.
what would be good compression ratio for me to go with. because im thinking it will be about 2-3 years after i get the engine built up before i can get the supercharger.
Re: buying a 383 stroker kit when i get back from afganistan.
A good target compression ratio for a boosted LT1 is between 9:1 and 9.5:1.
Re: buying a 383 stroker kit when i get back from afganistan.
Maybe you aren't comprehending what several people have already told you, but a motor built for boost WITHOUT the supercharger will have VERY disappointing results. If you're satisfied with sub-par performance for 2-3 years then go for it.

. i just called the nearest shop RPM Motorsports in raleigh, nc and they said 6800 for port and polished heads, 383 stroker, cam and dyno.

1st off 30th thank you so much for your service!
I'll give u 3 Steps:
Here is a simple excel (2010 version let me know if you need a older version) of what I was talking about: http://brandoncordoba.com/wp-content...r-service.xlsx (right click on this link & download)
I'll give u 3 Steps:
- When you get back go to a local fbody meetup & drive around in diff. combos to see what you really like. Buy em a beer, most people love showing off. Try to go with em to the track so they can let loose.
- Start with the end in mind, & reverse engineer it. Based off the other cars write a list of what you would like, power, suspension, reliability, powerband/range u want to focus on, whatever is most important to you.
- Make a simple excel spreadsheet. With your total amount of $ to spend. Subtract all the parts, & service, & leave an extra 15% for God only knows stuff. Move stuff in & out of that list, till you find the best balance between your wants & cash.

Yup seams like a waste of time, trite, untill you have a project car in the garage going on 5 years, & realize damn I should of planned this out better. In other words learn from my mistakes.
Re: buying a 383 stroker kit when i get back from afganistan.
I would go with a 12:1 compression forged 383 with a 200cc heads and cam from these guys http://advancedinduction.com/. Then if you are not happy with the power spray it, but I think you will be happy with the heads and cam 383. Buy the lightest weight quality forged internals you can get. Do not go with a low compression build
