buying a 383 stroker kit when i get back from afganistan.
ill be back around next march/april. i've always wanted a built up engine cause my z28 has about 160,000 and i want to use it as drag car. i figured when i get back i could afford the 383 and some more toys for the Camaro.
now for the suggestions
should i port and polish my heads or buy after market? the guys who are going to help/teach me how to rebuild my engine also can port and polish the heads.
what cam/components would you recommend? ive been told an LT4 hot cam would be great with ported heads and a 383.
i will be getting headders, short or long tube? emissions are not a problem and i have a friend at an exhaust specialty shop who will rig me what i want.
intake manifold/TB, should i get a new intake manifold or will stock be efficiant? im getting a Holly 58 mmTB if i can find one (i heard they went out of buissiness).
im planning on buying a 2500 - 3000 stall converter.
i have the 4L60E A4, suggestions for upgrade. no prefrences and debating on going M6 or staying Auto.
and im buying an SS ram air hood.
my goals are 500+ HP for 1/4 mile only not a daily driver.
i know its alot but ill have alot of play money when i get back.
thanks guys.

Re: buying a 383 stroker kit when i get back from afganistan.
I'm going to guess here and say that you mean flywheel horsepower.
Getting your heads ported and polished should be enough for that power level.
LT4 hotcam is a nice small cam but it is out dated and there are so many better grinds out there for you. I would go ahead and get a custom grind cam that's more aggressive to take advantage of the extra cubes.
Longtube headers is the best way to go
Keep the stock manifold and throttle body you don't need to upgrade them at that power level
As for the stock converter get it matched to whatever cam you get. You will probably want something higher than what you are thinking
If you stay A4 then you might want to get it beefed up for the extra power
Thank you for your service

thanks man.
i also forgot to mention that i will be buying a supercharger after i beef up the engine and top end.

Re: buying a 383 stroker kit when i get back from afganistan.
Ok so if your going to use boost then remember to use forged stuff and build it with low compression for the boost. You will have to beef up the the bottom end to handle the boost. I forgot to add in my first post that you will need another rear end as the 10 bolt won't handle all that power a 9" or a 12 bolt would be able to
Re: buying a 383 stroker kit when i get back from afganistan.
man go with a 383 from Clayton Engines on Ebay. The forged version is only 3,000 then add Lloyd Elliot heads/custom cam. Of coarse long tubes, all the bolt ons. Save the money from a supercharger and get a 12 bolt or 9inch rear end. That combo easy 430+hp n/a and if you really want more get nitrous. Easy 10's set-up.
Don't forget the other stuff though.....LCA's, SFC's, slicks, stall or good clutch. Do it right and it could be a daily driver that runs 10's. I've priced it out but I'm far from accurate but figure around 10k you can have all of that.

Also, God bless you for what your doing. I'm also in the army so nothing but respect for what your doing. Come back safe and let these guys help lead you in the right direction for a killer combo that'll ruin any ricer or mustangs dreams. Take care

Just imagine how much other bad information you are getting.
You have got a long time to do some reading, use that time wisely

Touchy subject but do your research and good luck to you.

This is where the debate begins lol. I personally run CNC ported aftermarket heads. They work very well. That being said there are ALOT of folks running with one of 2 well known porter's, and both have produced very successful combinations. They port the heads, flow them and then match it with a custom billet cam just for your car....very hard to beat that IMHO. I also like the Trick Flow heads. They weren't an option when I did mine but they are CANDY. The two companies I am talking about are Lloyd Elliot (LE) or Advanced Inductions (AI).what cam/components would you recommend? ive been told an LT4 hot cam would be great with ported heads and a 383.
Hot cam would suck *** with a 383 and not meet your goals by a long shot!i will be getting headders, short or long tube? emissions are not a problem and i have a friend at an exhaust specialty shop who will rig me what i want.
Long Tube!intake manifold/TB, should i get a new intake manifold or will stock be efficiant? im getting a Holly 58 mmTB if i can find one (i heard they went out of buissiness).
Stock intake is fine, I don't like the Holley TB's at all. You could benefit from a bigger TB at those cubes and Hp. The intake will have to be machined to accept the TB If it is over 52 mm....I would get a 58 ASM.....im planning on buying a 2500 - 3000 stall converter.

Now one other thing I HAVE to put out there. I do not know first hand the circumstances involving Clayton and that thread. What I do know is the person having the problems with them was not the person who posted that thread. I also know that there was some sort of stoppage due to type of cam or whatever on the consumer's part. What I also know is their work is of the HIGHEST quality, and that they are in extremely high demand. If turn around time is an issue for you and you know what you want, I would suggest getting your order to them well before you come back, should you go that route.
I also agree that there is alot of information available and that you should read and research when you get time. Dont believe everything you read, confirm it!
Thank you for your service! God Bless, and God Speed!
Re: buying a 383 stroker kit when i get back from afganistan.
Additionaly, as I have read the entire thread, you are potentially seeking two different combo's. A naturally aspirated 500 hp car is far different than a 500 hp supercharged car. Totally different in every way. As was mentioned you could build it nasty and spray it as well, as those are one in the same so far as builds go, and quite a buit cheaper!

my intentions are to build up the engine/top end, headders then add on a supercharger, because my engine like i said has over 160,000 on it. i want to get as much HP as possible before i supercharge it. is there something else/ a different combo you would suggest?
and as far as the engine build, i have a friend who had his jeep rebuilt by a friend of ours with a 383 stroker put in it and he did an amazing job. he has rebuilt a 96 Firebird with a 383 and for ****s and giggles he did an S10, i asked him why and he replied why not. lol. he does really good work and ive seen the outcome. he told me we could remove the engine clean it resize everything and install the kit in a weekend. meanwhile his partner would port and polish my heads and install the cam.
i also need some advice on a cam, i was headding towards an LT4 hot cam but as some people have saide in the thread the LT4 is outdated. any suggestions with the cam?

Either build a motor designed for boost or build a motor designed to run N/A.
I am going to be honest with you. The second-hand work that your friends will provide will probably yield second-hand results. There is no way a motor can be torn down, rebuilt, and machined with QUALITY in only a weekend.
Seriously...do some searching, find some cars with the ETs/HP numbers you are looking for, see how they reached it and GET THEIR ADVICE. The last thing you can do at this juncture and with your education level is to take advice from friends who have ZERO experience with LT1s. It will only end in disappointment.
