I don't know if you came across this or not, but for some general cam swap info, Shoebox put together a hell of a guide which includes parts, tools, etc here (#'s 6 & 7)

Can anyone else give me input on the parts list I posted? I need to know if I have everything that's needed.

Re: Budget valvetrain for CC306?

Heres what I did:
New comp 612 springs (comes with locks/retainers)
new oem timing set
new factory hard push rods (n20 had mine a little.... bent)
used 30k mile oem lifters
used 1.6 crane golds self aligning
gasket kit from Combination Motorsports

That was the cheapest I found I could do it and have some reliability.

Stock bottom end, spinning to @ 6700. With longtubes, tune, 4.10s I am trapping consitent 108-109 on stock heads.

A 7 degree setup is a little stronger than a 10 degree lock/retainer.

Someone let me know if that's correct. Here's my list of parts, complete with part number, price, and vendor information. All these prices are the lowest I could find. Any input would be very helpful, considering I really don't know jack about valvetrain components.

Don't forget valve stem seals, intake manifold gaskets, waterpump gaskets and front cover gaskets. If you have high miles on the car, you might consider replacing the front cover seals as well. You can get all these from your local GM dealer.

You'll also want some engine assembly lube for the cam, however, you can also use oil to lube the cam if you will be starting the motor shortly after the cam is in. You'll also want a tube of black RTV to seal the front and back of the intake manifold and front cover.

Re: Budget valvetrain for CC306?

I'd use grey RTV on the intake, cures harder and seals better.

Re: Budget valvetrain for CC306?

I've never used grey, but used black on a number of cars with zero problems. Either will work.

Re: Budget valvetrain for CC306?

Never noticed if you said it but do you have the supporting boltons to go with the cam? I don't know if there is many but I do know that you will need atleast a mail order tune and some headers. I wouldn't run stock manifolds with that cam.
