Question BORLA cat-back owners --> inside

I have always wanted to put a borla on one of my cars, but it never really panned out. I like the idea of the cat-back system with the adjustable plates and all, but its pretty expensive, and I will probably never adjust the plates anyway. So I figure for half the money I can buy a borla rear section, but I want to know how it rates with the adjustable cat back. I have heard a few of the adjustable systems, and I like them, but I don't think I have heard just the borla muffler set up.

So my question is, how does the rear section setup compare to the adjustable cat-back setup ? (without factoring in the ability to adjust the plates...)

Thanks in advance
Dave

I would just run an electric cut-out on a regular cat-back.

I've got unplated borla on my car, but I don't know about just the rear section. If I were to buy it again, I would still get the adjustable plates. It gives you so much more freedom, especially if you get tired of it being quiet, or tired of it being loud. It also has a 1,000,000 mile warranty, so how can you go wrong with that? Bite the bullet and get it, you won't be sorry.

I never heard a Borla rear section b4, but i love my Borla Catback w/ 3" Borla Y-pipe.. My car stands out among other LT1's cause Borla just sounds nasty
I dyno'd my car last week and dyno'd it with the closed plate which only allowed through the muffler and made 260hp 303tq, then with the plate wide open i made 267hp 301tq, so gains are defintly there.

Look for a used Borla system, im sure they are out there..Thats what i did

Dave, I have both. I originally used a borla rear section in place of the factory muffler back system on my 97 WS6. The tone of the muffler was a little better, there was maybe a couple of HP gain. I later replaced it with the Borla cat back and there was an increase in HP. Currently that rear section is perfectly at home on my 94 V6. That's where it's probably best suited. The rear section has smaller tubes and really doesn't flow enough to compare it to the 3" cat back. It's better than a factory muffler back in tone, looks and a little better flow. To me, the factory muffler has a tone similar to tennis ***** rocketing off a concrete wall. The Borla muffler is a smoother performance tone. I've seen those used for about $250.

Some good info in here, I appreciate the responses.

Joe, I think your info was most helpful since you had both systems. I was hoping a Borla rear section was just basically like the cat bak system and just not adjustable. Apparently they are very different. I have headers and no cats on the car, but it has a flowmaster muffler and I am getting tired of the sound. When I rev it up over like 2k it sounds like a tin can. So I figured changing to a borla set up would be much better. I have heard them run and they are impressive.

I will probably hold out and get the cat back setup, that's what I've wanted for quite some time.

Dave,

Ironically, I have had both systems as well. When I had the rear section, the car was louder than stock, but not much of a performance gain. When I installed the catback, I got the sound and performance I wanted. The catback rumbles much better than just a regular rear section. Somewhere down the line, I would like to upgrade to a GMMG catback.

Dave, here is a side quarter view of the rear section installed......you can see how small the exhaust tubing really is.

Yeah the catback is what I really want, but the rear section seems to be a good fit for the V6...

I found one on here just waiting to try and close the deal

if you compare joe1320's borla to mine.... you might see the difference; kinda hard to tell. I'll get a better pic tomorrow

It actually wasn't too bad on my WS6. Even when I ran SLP shorties and a random tech Y pipe, the tone wasn't raspy at at. A very nice velvet tone. On my 94 V6 there is no raspy tone either, but there is still that 3K rpm scream that the 3.4s get. Kinda sports car sounding rather than muscle car. It beats anything else that I've heard on the V6s.
