Black smoke, won't stay running
Black smoke, won't stay running
Hi all. Very new to site but was given great info before now I have a slightly different problem.
I just replaced the fuel regulator back to stock. Also pulled all injectors sent out to be cleaned repaired and tested. And replaced plugs. Wires were msd new
Took alittle to crank over (been sitting 3 weeks), once it started you had to keep
Your foot on the gas at 2k rpms or would stall. A lot of black smoke when you hit gas than would taper off and very light cloudy smoke. Didn't smell nor was it wet. After I let off pedal
It immediately dies. Than I noticed a puddle of antifreeze on floor and sprayed in engine bay and plugs on opti were wet. Now I know I have a lot going on at once but any info at all would be awesome.

Re: Black smoke, won't stay running
A problem with the coolant temp sensor could cause an excessively rich cold start on a warm day. See if the coolant problem is related to the temp sensor, or affected the temp sensor in the water pump housing.
Could also be a problem with the replacement fuel pressure regulator. Did you check the fuel pressure after the install?

Re: Black smoke, won't stay running
There's a temp sensor test procedure on shbox.com
I can't post the link because I'm on my phone.
There's a lot to be said for using Scan9495 (also on 93) to actually watch the sensor readings.

Ok. That site is so informative. Thank you.
So from briefly what I told you does it sound like the dreaded opti? I'm going to purchase a spark plug tester tom to check every wire.

Re: Black smoke, won't stay running
Ok. I flashed the car today and received troubled code 15. I think that's Coolant sensor circuit-low temperature indicated. Now what? Do I replace the sensor?
Re: Black smoke, won't stay running
Water pump coolant temp sensor is the one monitored by the PCM. The driver's side coolant temp sensor is just for the temp gauge in the dash.
Have you tried resetting the PCM to clear the code? Does it return?

Re: Black smoke, won't stay running
Test the sensor and wiring using the procedure on shbox.com. Could be an open circuit in the wiring. Could be a faulty sensor. That's why I mentioned the sensor and the test procedure earlier.
