Big problems stalling backfiring stumbling etc

Alright this whole time the car has had a rough idle, and if you stepped on it quick it would stumble. So replaced plugs wires coil. Now a while long after that it is starting to buck when drving. Now all of a sudden I go to start the car and it started up rough as hell backfired and stalled. try starting again hard as hell then rough as hell wanted to stall out so keep with the gas and backfiring boom stall. You cant even keep it running and if you raise the rpm up to at least 2000 if you are lucky otherwise it just backfiring and stalls. the motor just feels like it wants to blow up out of the car its running that rough. But it has been good for a long time now all of sudden its done. This morning/ afternoon it was fine still rough idle but not bad, now tonight bam its totally different.

Now if I could have a starting point where to start looking it would be great.

thanks for any help

174000 km on motor. maybe opti??? igntion module maybe coil but it is not that old like a couple months but when installed it was great. plugs and wires are right not burnt. I did the plugs wires coil like 3 months ago. I did get gas here 2 days ago maybe gas but its premium and the motor is really bad running like the backifiring and hard starting and stalling so that cant be gas

Go with the basics. Have it scanned for codes, check grounds, fuel pressure, spark. More vehicle information would be helpful.

1995 lt1 174,000 km
cold air headers, no cat egr blocked off magnaflow muffler 3-4 month old ngk-55 new msd coil, wires.

auto tranny completly rebuild year ago.

All has been well these last couple days. yesterday I fixed my exhaust leak cause it causing my knock retard. Now there is no knock retard or any codes as of this afternoon. But these last couple days the idle has been rougher, and when crusing it has a bucking felling to it and even when you step on it it doesnt seem like it wants to go. then tonight it developed the symtoms like the previous post. Like bam there it happened. But this whole time I had a slight rough idle like a miss every so often the motor would shake. And a quick snap with the throttle it would stumble. Now its crap.

just a guess... it may be the screws that fasten the rotor in the opti have come loose causing the ignition to "fire at will" any random cylinder the rotor comes across. it's an EXTREMELY common problem with the optispark and contains the same symptoms as you describe. the good news is it's a cheap fix with a little loc-tite on the rotor screws. the bad news is you first have to make sure that is the problem, take the opti off and take it apart.
usually a coil and ign. module either work or they don't meaning the engine either runs or it doesn't start. if you have the means to an ignition scope you can make quick work as to whether or not the culprit is ignition related.

just an update I scanned the computer and I gave me Code 41. So now where do I start opti or ignition module. I guess I can use shoebox's page and test the 2 things and find out that way.

thanks for help so far
