Best streetable LT1 combo? Opinions please!!
Best streetable LT1 combo? Opinions please!!
I've got an LT1 that's going into my '88 Trans Am. I'm hoping for a 6-speed too, but it's got a 700R4 w/ shift kit and Vette servo.
Anyway, I'm conflicted on the best streetable engine combo. This will most likely be my daily driver.
I've got a lead on a Super Ram intake for the LT1, so I think I'll go that route, but I do have a bare LT1 intake I can use.
What would the best streetable combo be?
THis is what I've considered so far:
cc305, LT1 AFR heads, coated SLP 1 3/4" headers & Y-Pipe w/high-flow cat....OR Llyod Elliot heads/cam combo
Would a 383 be most suitable than a Supercharger for the street with this combo? I'm basically thinking out loud, so I'd appreciate all comments. Thanks!

That's a very hazey question, since steetable to one person is different from another's opinion.
You need to ask yourself what kind of performance you expect.
And...what kind of money you are talkingg about.
If you are talking mild, then you don't need different heads. Lt1 ported heads will suit you fine. Perhaps if you are more specific, you will get some more input.JMHO

Thanks for the posts, and sorry for being vague. By streetable, I mostly mean gas mileage, and I don't want the car to die at red lights because it has a big lopey idle. I'd like 400HP and same torque. I realize MPG and torque don't go hand in hand, but that's something I'm shooting for.
Gas mileage is my main concern though. Since this will be in my semi-daily driver, I'd like atleast 14-18 city and 20-28 highway. I get damn near 28 highway with my car now. I know the LT1 won't do that, but I'd like as close as I can get. The main reason for my choice for the T56 is the 6th gear can get insane mileage right? I've got 2.73 non-posi now, but after the swap, I'm planning on either 3.42's or 3.73's. A compromise between MPG & streetable power being my 2 main concerns.
I've heard the LT4 hotcam is a little on the mild side. Would the CC305 be a better choice? Also, should I go N/A or S'Charged? Which would give me better MPG and power?

I'd go with the 3.73 or 4.10s over the 3.42. 6th gear is a 2nd OD and if you drive on a essentially level freeway with few hills, you might enjoy some fuel savings, however, if not, then 6th gear is useless in a 3.42. JMHO
I'd also recommend at least a 3.73 ratio with the half OD of the 6spd. Also, if most of your driving is HWY, you may be surprised at the mileage you can get if the tuner knows what they're doing. We've got more than one car running around making 440+rwhp and still getting 20+mpg hwy with 4.1X's
.
.
I have heads and a 230/236-112 cam. On the highway, I can get 24-25 MPG. The idle is smooth, but you can definitely tell there is a cam in it. With a good tune, you can easily drive it in traffic and all. I drive mine in LA traffic without thinking twice.
I only put 3-5k miles a year on my TA, so I really don't care about gas mileage. The 4.10s are sitting at home ready to go in.

and with a M6 I was getting better then 35mpg on my drive up from texas.
I think something like a EX 224/230 or the 230/236 would be perfect. good power, and still "streetable" in your words.

It all depends on the person.
