Question Best "Off The Shelf" cam?

Well i have a 1994 camaro lt1 and a 6 speed....I have headers, exhaust,no cat, 58mm tb, hypertec chip, k&n air filter, and just a stock bottom end. I was looking at one of these two cams and was woundering if they were any good or if someone could suggest a better one? probably keep it under 515 lift and 1.5 rockers its going to be run mostly on the street but i do have a lead foot and like to race especially the monkeys with their rustangs that think there cars are fast. So i do want a cam that will pull hard and i dont mind if it idles a little rough

No reason to NOT go with 1.6 rockers, IMO. Also, the 503 has been known as one of the best, if not THE best, cam for stock heads. That gets my vote.

Well I did the 503. But I wont know how it does for another month or so lol. But if you have the original 4l60e I wouldn't trust it for long up against any more power than you already have.

^^^^What He Said^^^^

My 4L60e worked perfectly at 100k miles. Until i put it behind a heads/cam/stalled engine. Then it lasted 33 miles.

Just realized he said he had a 6 speed.

In that case, no hard launches on sticky tires.

"Hypertech chip" on a PCM without replaceable chip? Do you mean a hypertech "module"? In any case, its probably not helping power-wise.

I bought the hypertech programmer, really just because I couldn't afford a dyno-tune and needed my computer adjusted for my gears. It was 275 for the tuner and it will adjust your fan temps and gears and install its "performance tune" (which it doesn't do) The GM dealership wanted $150 to adjust for my new gears so that's why I bought it. As far as the tune goes, it actually wouldn't let me adjust shift points past where they were. (My computer was adjusted before I got the car I believe). My shift points actually went down in RPM's even though I adjusted them higher. The tune did nothing. This was years ago. Don't ever buy this unit. I was able to sell it on Ebay for $200 the same year I bought it right when I got a PCM4less tune straight from Bryan's house (both of us living in PA).

Re: Best "Off The Shelf" cam?

If I didn't have the mods I have now, I would vote for the 503. From what I have seen, it's a great cam. I went with the 306 because I wanted a ton of top end power and I had my heads worked over as well. 1.6rrs, 918 springs, 5 angle valve job and some decent porting. If you are not porting you heads, do not get the 306 cam. It's too big for your engine.

Re: Best "Off The Shelf" cam?

The 503 is one of the best off the shelf cams for stock headed engines. I bought one and before i put it in sold it in favour of a similar cam custom ground by LE which is almost the same duration but has more lift and better all around design which is expected to make another 10-15 more rwhp over the cc503. So although the 503 is a great off the shelf they are similar cams that more up to date that will net you a little more power. Thats why i ditched the 503 for a custom grind which is very similar but will make a little more power and cost just a little more then an off the shelf cam. My vote is for a custom grind bases around those specs. Im going to be running LEs 223/230 .565/.565 112lsa version if you were interested.

Re: Best "Off The Shelf" cam?

I kind of wish I went with an LE custom grind but oh well. I didnt do head work either. Next time around im going 396 with a solid roller and some good A$$ heads. Heads make all the difference. And solid rollers always make more power than hydraulic!

Lol at it only lasting 33 miles, sounds about right though for a high mileage 4l60e.

I'd run that Lunati Voodoo camshaft. Lift is your friend, and the Lunati has more if it. Run it with some 1.6's rockers and good springs/tune/stall and you'll have a quick car.
