Best damper for a 383 LT1
Best damper for a 383 LT1
Just curious since I have an OEM replacement damper on there now. This has been bugin' me for quite awhile now. I have a 383; which route should I go? ATI superdamper? Anyone have any experiences they want to share?

Awesome. Thanks for the replies.
Anyone know of a good place to buy it from? I'm looking through Summit's catalog and they have a bunch. Which one is the one I need? My engine is internally balanced.

NHRA requires an SFI 18.1-rated damper for cars running under 11.00 seconds. The ATI is SFI-rated, but there are also some less expensive ones. I suspect the ATI would be the best choice for engines turning in excess of 7,000RPM.
Others may suggest the Fluidampr, and there is an SFI-rated "copy" of the Fluidampr that is sold on eBay for about 1/2 of what a real Fluidampr costs, but I have no idea if they are the same quality. Picking a damper is always a bit controversial, because 1/2 of the people will swear by Fluidampr and the other 1/2 will tell you they wouldn't even consider a Fluidampr. When I bought my ATI, the Fluidampr was just coming on the market, but the shop that did my work had been at a SEMA show where Fluidampr was challenged by several builders who claimed failures of the crank snout while using the Fluidampr. Eventually, Fluidampr went bankrupt, and was purchased by another company about 2 or 3 years ago, and their products were off the market for a while.

That is the 6.75" diameter unit with the aluminum shell and steel hub. The alternatives are either steel or aluminum with 7.5" diameter. I **think** the stock damper is 7.5".... but not sure, its got to be at least 6 years since I measured it.
The ATI damper will not bolt to the stock hub. It comes with its own billet hub. They are aware of the differences in the hub length for the LT1 with and without the crank position reluctor, and it comes with a spacer ring for the pre-1996 cars.
The ATI hub also includes a keyway machined into it, so it can be keyed to the crank. If you are looking at using it on a blower equipped car, you will need to double key the hub to the crank, and reinforce the outer diameter of the hub on high boost applications. I have seen the hubs break on two LT1's running more than 20# of boost, one with an ATI PRo-Charger and the other with a Vortech blower.

Re: Best damper for a 383 LT1
Currently looking for the most suitable damper for my application. I've looked at both types and the thing that concerns me most is the rpm range. It's unlikely for me or the majority of users to rev our motors past 6500, so would that make Fluidamper ideal for the majority of us?
Will the ATI dampen vibrations effectivly at lower rpm, like cruise rpm, because I haven't seen it mentioned that ATI is a bad damper below 6500 only it is much better at high rpms.

Check the manufacturers' websites... I think they have charts showing magnitude of vibration vs. RPM. I've been running the ATI for 5 years. For 2 years it was a daily driver. Now its a track car. Redline is 7,200rpm, but it doesn't spend much of its time at that level.
I found this... yes its ATI propaganda, but it does have some data in it.

Then there's the Fluidampr version:
