belt really needed?

i broke my alt. bracket and have to take it to the welder.

i was thinking the belt runs what,
alt
power steering
ac.
air pump

i am missing anything? since the water pump is driven off the timing chain and so is the opti couldn't i just drive it up there with no belt or alternator?

also, at the track couldn't you pull the belt and charge the batt. between runs?

thanks,
mike

no the belt isnt needed as long as you have good charge on your battery, and yes some ppl do pull the belt for track runs. how long is the drive?

No need to worry about the AIR pump, it is electric.

then what is the pulley located next to the alternator, the backside of the belt wraps around? it looked like it had hoses going in and out of it like a small AIR pump. but i didn't trace them at all.

That is the power steering pump toward the engine side. The AIR pump is located on the front of the engine, below the drivers side head, and is electrically driven.

5 miles should be no problem, just lay off the electrical accessories. Try not to drive when you need your headlights, as those can take the juice out of a battery very quickly.
