Battery Voltage issue

My car seems to start with around 13 volts then as it goes into closed loop and the fans lick on they drop to 11.9, or so and then the car starts to feel like its going tp stall, however it never has. My question is, is this normal? When I have my lights on and wipers it dips pretty low on my gauge probably close to 10 volts, but I cant prove that exactly. Ive included a log from Freescan that shows how the voltage fluctuates (CHECK AROUND LINE 579). Thanks to anyone that can help.
By the way the Altenator is stock as far as I know and the Battery is about 3 years old.

Re: Battery Voltage issue

I would not worry unless the voltage stayed low for more than the 1/3 of a second that yours dipped below 12v.

My own recent testing has indicated that the voltage that is supplied through the ignition switch can be up to 1 volt lower than what the system voltage is elsewhere. The voltage you see on a scan tool (and on the dash gauge) is voltage passed through the ignition switch, so it might look a little lower than what the alternator is actually putting out. Not sure all these cars do this, but from posts I have seen, it seems most do.

Re: Battery Voltage issue

I'm not sure that your fans should 'lick', but sounds like you need a new battery. When i went to pick my car up I jump started it 13 times. I ended up buying a new battery and it's run perfect ever since. If you have ever left your headlights on i would guarantee that it's the battery. I left my mom's 2001 suzuki grand vitara's headlights on for 20 minutes and the battery wouldnt hold a charge since. You should also check the connections to the battery. If your terminals are loose it will cause lower voltage.

Re: Battery Voltage issue

Check the battery cables, and terminals. I just put a set of cables from here on my Camaro and will start it up for the first time on Friday (I broke my electrical junction box and need to replace it). I'll even make a short movie of the cranking so everyone can hear how much faster it cranks than with the stock cables, even considering my car's been sitting for 2 weeks. That should be a good testimony.

Re: Battery Voltage issue

I wouldn't replace a thing.

8 months laster and after replacing both the battery and the alternator, as well as checking all grounds and wiring, and I'm no closer to the answer.
