Balancer from Camaro and Caprice LT1 different??
Balancer from Camaro and Caprice LT1 different??
I'm trying to finish up the 383 LT1 I'm building for a 93 camaro and I have a problem witht he balancer. The balancer i have is froma 94 LT1 Caprice and it does not appear to be correct. When it is mounted on the hub the balancer is about 1/4" to far forward and does not line up with the belt or other pullies. I have triple checked that the hub is fully seated on the crank so that is not the problem.
I'm wondering if the backspacing on the Caprice LT1 balancer is different than one from a Camaro or Firebird LT1 motor?
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated as this is the last peice in the puzzle to get this motor running,
Thanks,
Rob

Kevin,
Thanks for the info. I have the original hub off of the 94 Caprice that the balancer came from and compared it to the 94 camaro hub I purchased for this car and the hubs are identical. I am buying another balancer from a 93 camaro to use so hopefully the difference is in the balancer and not the hub. Though I suppose it's possible that the hub I bought was misrepresented and actually came from a caprice also...

OK... just found some info:
Camaro-Firebird has a 1-5/16" thick balancer
Corvettes have a 2-1/8" thick balancer
"If using a Caprice, Impala or Buick engine it will require a crankshaft hub G.M. part number 12553250 used on 1992-95 Corvette and Camaro-Firebird engines. "
Hmm....
What's the thickness of your balancer?

Hmm, interesting. I'm stuck at work right now so I won't be able to measure the balancer until I get home tonight. Does the source for that info list the thickness of the Caprice and/or Impala balancer also?
From that second part it certainly sounds like the impala hub is different that the camaro/firebird part.
Madwolf, would it be possible for you to pull the hub also? If it is indeed different I would be interested in buying that also since the ones I have must both be from caprice LT1's.

Madwolf,
Thanks for all the help. It definately looks like the hub is different too, so if you could pull the one you have and send it with the other parts that would be great. Just shoot me an email if you do pull it with a price that you want for it so we can work something out.
Thanks,
Rob
