Is this a bad Optispark?!
Is this a bad Optispark?!
This is going to leave a mark-- tough one.
First some background. I have a '93 LT1 transplanted to a '36 Chevy. Chip has AIR, EGR deletes and some other sundrie changes to suit the setup.
I rebuilt the optispark when I put it in-- new cap & rotor. But the base had a good amount of miles on it when I put it in. The optical rotor also had a small ding in it, so it was suspect to me. But I hadn't changed it out.
The engine got installed, and I got it all running without too much problems, but it was a huge wiring project. Anyway, all was good, no codes, etc.
After sitting awhile (many months), as the car is still very much under construction... the engine would misfire some. It would "pop" at idle. I figured it was just idling a little rich because of the engine mods-- headers and 1.6 lifters.
Then, after more time. I would have some hard starting. Again, I figured just stale gas from sitting. About 2 weeks ago, I started it (hard start), but it ran-- with it's signature popping.
Finally, I went this weekend to start it, and it would try-- but not catch. It would only file on one cylinder. I think #5. I could smell gas, and can hear the electric fuel pump cycle. So I figure it is getting fuel OK. In case the gas was bad, I freshened it up with new too. Still won't fire. If anything, it is worse.
Does this sound like the Optispark has gone west?

Re: Is this a bad Optispark?!
Check the fuel pressure. The stale fuel may have gummed up the filter or the sock on the pump suction side.
Check again for codes. The critical code for the Opti, DTC 16, shuts down the fuel system but does not turn on the SES light.
