a bad Opti spark, can it cause backfiring?

well, im trying narrow down my major problem

after the car is warm it will start backfiring and hesitating between 1000-2000 rpm's
but if i step on the gas it works
there is a hissing sound in tune w/ the engine, and im pretty sure thats EGR

but what gets me, is that the backfiring seems to only happen when the engine has warmed up... so to me that sounds like it has something to do with the O2...

the EGR is a cheap replace but i donno how that would be done, my haynes book doesnt do a very descriptive replacment/repair portion on that subject.

its not having any trouble starting or anything, with limited funs what should i repair first? EGR, opti, or possibly O2

Yea, a bad opti can make your car backfire. Mine does it every once-in-a-while, but my opti is on its way out, not completely gone yet. It is kind of funny when it happens, it scares people s#itless on the road. I have no cats and a cutout, so once when I nailed it and it backfired, my friend behind me saw a flame shoot out the cutout! lol, scared the living **** out of him, he thought I fudged something up. Check plugs and wires as well. I found a couple on mine that were so loose I could screw them around with my fingers! I don't know how they got so loose, but I check them every other week or so. Good luck with the diagnosis though!

Yea, that happens in mine sometimes as well. Check your plugs and wires first though. Then check the coil. If everything checks out, just go buy a rebuilt one from Autozone and call it a day.

Mine blew flames out the back, like full on fire. Sounds like the OPTI to me.

If its backfiring under accleration then you have ignition problems, my guess is a bad cap and rotor, this is exactly what mine did when they went.
Might as well throw a complete new opti in.
