You can check the resistance on each injector for starters. Should be about 14 ohms if I remember correctly (Haynes manual is a must! )

Also, check for a burnt spark plug wire. I had one that resembled a bad opti, and it took me forever to figure it out.

FYI for the coil question, on older cars the tach actually pulls the RPM signal from the low tension side of the coil. So a bad coil can actually throw off your tach.
