Question Assorted LT1 Problems...

Ok, I just got my '94 Trans Am yesterday and I'm trying to go through it real well and get it as close to new as possible. It starts up just fine, and at first it seemed to idle very smooth, then all of a sudden it started revving a little high. Every few seconds it will do this then stop. Then start it again. So I'm inspecting the engine bay as close as I can and notice the IAT is totally gone. The open plug is in the elbow but there is nothing plugged in, and no sign of it anywhere under the hood. I thought well maybe its been relocated. Nope, no where. Then after driving it for a little while the check engine light comes on and it seems to jerk or studder on acceleration. Could all this be related? I am going to have a trusted mechanic take a look at it Thursday. What do you guys think? Thanks for the help!

my car used to do this as well... it could be a faulty MAF but you should get a better idea when ur mechanic reads the trouble codes

Yeah I hope he can find the problem. I just hope the Opti-spark and tranny are ok.

Could very well be the MAF as mentioned earlier...although can't the AC cause that to happen as well? My dads buick (which had an LT1) would fluctuate and it was the AC, he replaced 3 AC's in that thing...unbelievable...everytime it'd start idleing kinda wierd as the compressor would come on and go off...it wasn't a big fluctuation but it'd range from approx 800 rpm to probably 1200 or so.

How many miles are on it? How many previous owners were there? Have you done anything to it (like changed plugs, wires, changed coolant, etc)?

If you just bought it, I'd have the tranny serviced (fluid drained and refilled, new gasket, etc)... I had this done like 6 months after I bought mine, and they found a BEARING inside my tranny fluid case!!

It didn't cause any damage (thank God!) but the mechanic said it looked like something off of an import because he'd never seen a bearing that size on a domestic!

Whoever put that in there needs to be shot!
Man that is messed up! I probablly will have the tranny serviced. The car has 130,000+ miles on it so I'm sure it needs alot. I will probably change the coolant tomorrow and have the mechanic do the tranny service...too messy for me. Probably get him to do the plugs and stuff too.

Will a diagnostic pick up a bad MAF? I don't think the A/C is coming on. I watched all that pretty close while the hood was up...but I do have about the same idling prob though.

Need to find out what the trouble code is. Start from there.

I personally have 114,500 miles on mine, and I've been using Valvoline Max-Life for probably the last 20,000 miles.
I'm switching and I've got 70k...you really think they'll be a problem?

you should have no problem. It doesnt cause NEW leaks when you switch, it just makes exsisting leaks more pronounced.

Unhappy

Well at least i know I'm not the only one with that problem.
I got a 94 lt1 and about one month ago i started to have the same problem. Mine starts to act when i open throttle I get little back fires and this happens after 4,000 rpm and the car stops pulling. After it heats up to normal temp. thats when my rpms start jumping, it started off small but now they jump as high as 3 grand. Heres all the info i was able to gather on this problem.......
It's not plugs because i had those changed
I took it to two diff. mechanics and both came up with the same codes MAF sensor. I ended up replacing it with a grenately but it was out of a 96 lt1 corvette so it didnt make any changes to the way the car ran. I'm wating on the stock MAF that i ordered to come in and i'll keep you posted. Oh i would not worry about the tranny more then likely thats not the problem.

It also seems to have studder. Not really a transmission feeling but like the motor is just kind of hiccuping.

I really hope its not that. I'm just going to change the plugs and wires then go from there.
