Another Blue Smoke Question
Another Blue Smoke Question
I'm trying to take care of a blue smoke, burning oil problem on my Moms 93 Formula. I'm getting the car ready for her cause she's out in Cali and want to take care of this before she has it shipped out to Cali.
The car has 78k miles on it and was never beat on. Except by me to clear out the carbon once or twice a year. The car has sat during the winter months but if the roads were clear she drove it. Last week I took it to work about forty miles each way. Since it's been sitting for about 3weeks I thought it would be good for it. When I was at work I was sitting in the car with the A/C on for about an hour I turned the car off and worked for about a half hour. When I started the car back up blue smoke was coming out of the tailpipes. This was'nt your typical valve seal puff it lasted for a good ten to 15 seconds.
When I got home I decided to change the intake gaskets and the spark plugs on the car. I waited 24 hours to drive it. I took it for a spin driving normal and when I came back I revved the engine in park and guess what I saw Blue smoke still. So the next day I took it for a longer ride but this time left it in drive3 so the engine would rev a little more. I took it on the highway still in 3. When i got back home I revved it in park again and there was no smoke. I thought that ride cleared out any left over oil residue. About an hour later I took the car to get some beer and drove it normal in overdrive. When I got back I revved the car again and saw smoke again I was so pissed off
. So it seems if the rpm stay under 2k I get the smoke but if it runs at higher rpms it's ok.
I assume the next step would be valve seals. The car does use up some oil too. I checked for blow by through the dipstick tube and there was'nt any. I also checked the pcv valve and that was good. If you guys have any other suggestions that would be great.
Thanks
frank

Re: Another Blue Smoke Question
Look at the plugs and see if any are fouled. Have you taken the valve covers off yet? See if you have a lot of oil pooling at the back of the heads. When they sit for a long time and drive a little, some times the returns in the back plug up. This causes the seals to get overwhelmed in the back.
Re: Another Blue Smoke Question
Your problem should be your valvestem seals. Get yourself the Viton seals to ensure you don't have to do this again anytime soon. You can change those seals with you Chilton manual handy. It's really not that much of a job -- in my opinion.
