Anothe Gas Gauge Question
I recently purchased a 95 Z28 for my son. SInce he in college and the car isn't, somebody has to drive it, so I am doing the best I can ... I've noticed that the gas gauge reads about 1/4 tank on the high end ... I see that this has been a problem ( thank you GM ) and I was wondering what is the recommend fix ... How do you adjust or calibrate it, or, does this tend to be a sending unit problem ? Of course my current solution is to never let the needle read 1/4 tank or less, but I would like to make it more reliable if possible. Any hints, tips, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. This car is so much fun that I may have to send my son to summer school
( 6 spd, flowmaster exhaust, all power accessories, Premium sound system , and just plain fast ... etc ) Anyway, thanks in advance for any responses ... sdtsdt

Welcome to the board. A few things about our gas guage/tank. The way the tank is shaped, when the guage reads 1/2 full, it is approx. in between 1/4 and 1/2. So, make it a habit to start looking for a gas station when it reads between 1/2 and 1/4, there are many who have walked because of this.
Also, when you accelerate, the needle will rise on the guage. In turn, when you brake, the needle will fall on the guage. Both scenarios giving false indication of the level of gas in the tank. Recommend to base the need for gas when cruising.
That is about all I know about the guage/tank. Also, get used to the search button up top. You can probably find an answer to any question you have.

my gas guage was way way way up past the FULL mark... then it broke and left me stranded with no gas.
dealer installed a brand new fuel sending unit and pump ($$$$$) and now the needle's farthest right is 90 degrees, and zero means ZERO fuel... it still accelerates down as soon as it hits the 1/2 mark.
so even in 2002 the brand new AC Delco sending units read wrong... there is nothing you can do.

There is nothing wrong with the guage, it's the way the tank is shaped. It's a tear drop shape that gets smaller on the bottom end. If the tank was square the guage would read perfectly. Thats why there is less gas in there than what you see on the guage

I dont knock GM for the shape of the tank, Only for not using a better gauge that would say 1/3 where as now it says 1/2 when it really has 1/3. All there vehicles seem to have some gas gauge issue. We need to take care of this. Thanks GM
