o.k. shoebox told me what resistor to put in...with I wrote down but does this need to be hooked to a switched 12v i.e. ignition or something along those line?

I take it I can't just loop it back to the charging stud or I will get a draw

 

I belive ignition, it only needs power while its running.

 

Switched would be what you want.
