All 97s

Still trying to get some feedback.

TSB vibrating DS did not cover 97s.

Has anyone who has/had a 97 experience vabration the DS.

Never drove mine fast enough to find out, but now when breaking in my new shortblock w/ 4.10s I notice loud noise around 80-90 MPH @ 2000 RPM.

Won't know for sure what the problem is until my breakin period is over and I can move up in RPMS.

Just wondering if that noise is DS vibration and if I should have it balanced or get the LS1 DS.

Thanks for your feedback/input.

I had my stock steel ds replaced with an LS1 ds under a dealer tsb in 98. Mine used to vibrate bad after 70mph, at the time I didn't really know what was causing it. One day driving 90-100 for a short distance the vibration cause my pininion bearing to seize making a horrible grinding noise and ruining the rear. Dealer had to replace the entire rear housing, gears and all. Best part of it all was I got a new rear at 25K and a free LS1 ds

Vibration? Where do i begin? Noticed my vibration as soon as i bought the car used in 8/00. Since then, i changed many things trying to locate the cause. LCA's, panhard rod, brand new rims, clutch, flywheel, rear guts, carbon fiber driveshaft, random tech torque arm, tranny mount (es, prothane, and gm), and finally, called gm for a new 6speed. Speaking with a well-known builder, he informed me that my LCA's were at a bad angle which caused the vibration. I lowered the car (mildly), so lca relocators supposedly solvd that issue. Personally, i still suspect the problems was in the area of the input shaft on the t56. Now that i have the old one out, i detect some play in the input shaft. But i had the same symptoms as you. Once i got to about 90 mph, a freaky vibration came up. By 105, i thought my doors were gonna fall off. The cf driveshaft helped immensely. It absorbs vibration, so it helped, but didnt not cure the problem. If youre diagnosing, i would recommend checking drivetrain geometry. I went thru a lotta money and grief, jut to find that it was as simple as lca relocators. Good luck, hope i helped.

One thing you could try is to take your driveshaft loose from the pinion flange and rotate it 180 degrees and then put it back on. Since the driveshaft and pinion flange are balanced as an assembly, if you put it on 180' out after you did your gears it can vibrate.

My stock DS started vibrating after 90mph.
Dealer told me the same thing... not covered.

Thanks guys. If it still makes the loud noise when I get my 500 break-in miles, I will firs of all try rotating the shaft 180 degs. as suggested.

If that doesn't work, I'll go for the alum. DS. I sure don't want to screw up my new gears.

I'm pretty sure my dealer wouldn't have ever given me a free LS1 ds if it were not for the old one being responsible for ruining the rear, knowing how stingy they are. I guess they figured giving me the LS1 ds was some insurance for them not to have to reebuild my rear again

My local dealer wouldn't even budge. I showed them the TSB and told them that it should include 97 even if it didn't, because I had no evidence telling me that the 97s had been fixed. Why else whould they change the shaft for 98+?

Really Pi$$ed me off, but what could I do?

Anyway, I guess I'll have to bite the bullet on this one.

I can't remember where I got it or what I did with it, but the TSB number is 674101.
