I've not heard that, BUT I have heard that a select few (roughly 3 - 10 cars) in 98 had LT1s. I read that it was done for racing class purposes so they could run that body style car in a certain class.

The factory didn't publicly offer any LS1 engine in an F-Body prior to MY1998. There were, however, a few LS1 powered 1997 Z28's running around as test mules in Southern California. After the particular shop mocked up a half dozen of them, tested them, GM quickly came by to 'claim' their cars and they were never seen again.

A practice that GM has done since, at least, the 50's [putting new engines in previous car bodies for testing].

have you seen pics of the car? if he bought it late in 97 and it has an ls1, i would guess that it is an early 98 model

For starters, look at the car, it's pretty obvious which motor it has now at least. Get the VIN and go down to your local dealer and ask the parts department for a SPID report. It'll list every option the vehicle came with. Most likely, he or a previous owner swapped it out and the story is just being carried over. Either way, if it's got an LS1 and everything works properly, go for it...

Yes, there were a very few 97 Camaros that came with the LS1... My wife and I looked at one in Denver in 97 which was a 30th anniversary edition SS model... and it was right next to a 97 LT4 SS like the one I now own... They only sold 100 of the LT4 cars in the US and the dealer said there were only about 20 of the LS cars built!

Re: Did Some 1997 Camaros Come With The Ls1?

Until I see proof, from a credible source, I'm not buying it. In all my years in dealing with 4th gens, I've never heard of a '97 production model having an LS1 from GM. The production 30th SS models were LT1's not LS1's.

You are right about the LT4. It was offered in '97, but that was the only other engine, besides the LT1, that could be had in a Camaro in '97.

In the last 17 years there has been no one ever claiming seeing such a thing. That should tell you something. If it was real, there would be proof and people claiming their "rare" car in public for all to see (and be envious of).
