AI Heads, cam and a few questions

Well tax returns are just around the corner and im feeling the need for more power, Im thinking about going with the AI 200cc heads and a custom ground cam, 1.6 roller rockers.

And i have a few questions, what springs should i use and do i have to do anything with the pushrods? Shorten them, get longer ones?

What lifters should i run?

and is an electric water pump worth it?

Im getting a factory replacement AC delco opti to.

and tell me everything else im going to need so i dont come short on my budget.

Im lookin for 400+ wheel horsepower

oh and i want specs for a cam that thumps and puts out good power but still daily driver with ok gas milage

will i need bigger injectors?

I believe their kits come with matched cams. And as for springs I think they already put decient springs on their heads as long as you order the whole kit and not just the cylinder heads. Which is probly want you want beings how you want a custom cam and all. Also I am sure you will need bigger injectors. But you should just get ahold of AI and ask them these questions. They would be best suit to answer them.

As said the springs come with the heads and you should let them spec the cam.

You will need bigger injectors. A bigger fuel pump is likely going to be needed too.

That MAF is going to be a tuning problem.

All good advice so far. They might be able to give you an educated quess on the push rods, but I'm sure their going to tell you to measure to make sure. Like 96 said, ditch the Maf you have and use a stock one. Also I would get rid of the shorty headers. Their only 1 5/8ths and most likely will be a restriction to the heads. Don't forget to through a new timing set in too, while your in there. I just used a stock replacement, but mines a 94.

If you are not too certain about measuring for push rod length I am sure any local machine shop would do that for you for pretty cheap. I beleive you need a special tool to do that with also. Maybe sombody else will know the answer to that.

I just installed Ai heads that were milled .020" with Impala gaskets and
ended up with 7.05" pushrods. You will need to measure it once the heads
are on to make the final call.

(Answers after your questions)

And i have a few questions, what springs should i use and do i have to do anything with the pushrods? Shorten them, get longer ones?
Pushrods will depend on your cam, lifters etc. They will help you with this and send you what "should" work and tell you to measure for correctness.

What lifters should i run?
Stock good condition lifters will be fine

and is an electric water pump worth it?
It depends on on your setup. They are worth rwhp, but if you have the option of upgrading to better headers over the EWP, I would do so while you are doing the heads and cam.

Im getting a factory replacement AC delco opti to.

and tell me everything else im going to need so i dont come short on my budget.
You will also need things like head bolts, gaskets, RTV, coolant, oil etc. Ai can help you out with thier packages by providing you with most or everything that you need. Another good idea would be to search the forums for head swap guides and look at the parts needed lists.

Im lookin for 400+ wheel horsepower
Assumigng you don't skrimp or get lazy that should be no problem. You will need the supporting mods such as intake, exhaust, tuning etc to make this goal though.

oh and i want specs for a cam that thumps and puts out good power but still daily driver with ok gas milage
LET THEM SPEC YOUR CAM!!!!! The cost differential is nothing and the price of the heads includes a billet cam spec'd to your goals.

will i need bigger injectors?
YES! look in the forsale section for a set of used 30-36lb injectors. 30s should have you covered, but if you start making power you will need 36s. My setup hits aroun 90% duty cycle on Accell 36lb injectors

Also, at least consider a valve train package. Thier valve train packages will include most of the parts that you will need for the swap to run correctly. Getting a package instead of piecing it all together will ensure that everything works. No what ifs when you buy a complete package.

Talk to Phil or Ron and let them handle the valvetrain components.
