Black coolant?

Yes I did a search and no answers.

New coolant (20 miles on it) came out with a black tint that hid the green coolant color. There was also a hint of oil on the surface. You could tell by the rainbow effect in top of the water.

Sadly, this engine was not well taken care of and there was significant rust in the block. When I drained the coolant, bits of the block came out. The guy said he ran it with straight water and blew a head gasket 6 months ago. I bought it, raced it, overheated it (because the radiator was 30% blocked with shiite) and now this...

Could this be caused by a blown head gasket?

Sounds like something cracked and it most definitely sounds like that is the cause of the head gasket.

Can you elaborate? I also was thinking cracked head before a blown head gasket.

When i purchased my 95z28 with 66k on it, the guy had all the Oil change receipts but thats all he did to the car in the 10 years of ownership, since new. The Dex-cool had failed miserably, coolant was black , overflow was black, I had the system flushed, Drove the car for a few hundred miles. The water pump started dripping ever so slightly. Had the waterpump changed and coolant flushed again as it still didnt look great. I also replaced the overflow tank at this time. The new GM waterpump also leaked from the weephole so it was replaced again and I had the system flushed again. The coolant is now finally very green and clean. The only problem I have now is the heatercore still needs flushed as the car does not put out alot of heat and its been -40 here. Before you figure headgasket or worse flush the coolant real well and see if it fixes the issue you have. Good luck and hopefully you just a good couple of flushes.

if you got a rainbow or oil on the surface... try the flush and drain the block but it still sounds to me that a head gasket might be blown or something cracked.

Could be a cracked block. Either way I would probly pull out the engine and check everything out.

Do you really mean "When I drained the coolant, bits of the block came out."?

Well, little pieces of something came out of the block drain holes when I drained that portion of the system. Since he ran only water for a while, I assume that the block is full of loose rust that is breaking away.

Could you elaborate? Where would this occur that gives me black water? Also the oil was not extreme. You had to look for the oil on top.

I can see a cracked head doing this at the exhaust but a block would only give you oil correct? Plus checking the oil shows that is fine. Further, the block is at atmospheric isn't it? The coolant generally runs some 10-15 PSI? So wouldn't coolant go into the block first?
