AEM's engine position module

has anyone heard about this yet? any information? just wondering if its possible to eliminate the optispark with this, or at least take it out of the equation for firing the plugs. would this make it easier to run a megasquirt setup too?

With an OEM type LT1, EFI intake manifold with the large rectangular plenum box, there “isn’t any possibility” of using the conventional rear distributor port (it doesn’t exist). The intake plenum box occupies that area.

OK, I learned something I wasn't aware of. However, access would be "very difficult" under the cowling on a 4th Gen F-Body. You may need to get out the ole saws-all and go to work on the cowling!

yeah, figured as much. I know some SBC distributors (crab style I think it was?) fit back there, just cant remove them. this appears to be shorter than a conventional distributor. I guess its one of those things you cross your fingers and pray that it doesnt break!

but, aside from fitment and manifold conversion, it should work, no?

MSD makes the "CPC" system, which appears to be pretty much the same. The advantage of the CPC is that the distibutor "stub" is just that... fits fairly flush with the top of the manifold. In fact, the MSD stub appears to be identical to the base of the AEM unit. I know that MSD has been making their setup for at least 2 or 3 years.

I've always wondered if it would be possible to develop an interface to translate the CPC cam amd crank position signals into the equivalent of the Opti's high and low res pulse patterns, in order to use the stub to eliminate the Opt.

Couldn't you use that MSD system to run an ignition system independent of both the pcm and the opti?

That is the purpose of the MSD setup.

The problem with eliminating the Opti completely is that the stock LT1 PCM needs the Opti signals to function. It needs them for injector timing, and will not let the fuel pump run unless it gets the signals.
