advice on Hot cam kit / CC305+promag+918

Hi, I'm wanting to do a cam swap : either Hot cam kit from summit or CC305.

Question is : i would prefer the CC305 + pro mag + 918 springs, locators ... but all of this will be something about 900$ when an hotcam kit is just 500$.

As these 2 combos may work the same, i want some opinion on getting the CC or the Hot cam. Is there any real gain on the CC to worth the price ? Are there any weak point on the Hot cam kit ? How are the GMPP rollers ?

All advices welcome

Pierre

I have the Hot Cam w/ LT4 springs and Crane 1.6 RRs and I'm very happy with it. Also, PCMforLess tuning to go along with Hot Cam. Prior to cam and PCMforLess tuning, the best 1/4 mile time was 13.35. Afterwards it moved my ET to a 12.68. Recently with the 3200 stall Vigilante and a lot of chassis work, I've gone 12.17 with the Hot Cam. Also, I've improved my 60ft times by two tenths (1.6s from 1.8s) with the chassis work.

Well the promag as well as the 918's are going to be lighter on the valvetraint which in turn is going to relate in more power. The CC305 has a wider LSA which will relate into a bit better streetablily. Which i'm guessing your wanting going with a midgrade cam like that? Shoot us some info/goals if you'd like and we'd be more than happy to discuss your options with you.

Thanks

You could get the hotcam kit and have no problems at all, but the springs given in the set are really just marginal for that cam. You would most likely want to upgrade the springs that come with the kit.

On a side note though you could get combination motorsport 612 springs that would work great with either cam for about 60 dollar less. Also the promags you were most likely suggesting were NSA and the ones in the hotcam kit are SA 3/8stud.

Take this scenario for example: Imagine that you are drag racing at the local strip. The hotcam kits components would be like having 4 donuts. The 918s or 612s would be like have drag slicks and skinnies. Sure both will get you down the track but your donuts have a much higher risk of failing under the conditions presented.

hum,

i have already in my car Pace setter LT, Hooker catback, moroso CAI, 160° thermostat, TB by-pass, MadZ28 tune.

I plan make a cam change but keep it very streetable as it is a daily driver.
My goal is to make the best power possible while maintening it streetable and doing just the cam change.

In the future (not before next year), if i still want i will build a 383.

Also, what kind of power should i get with my mods and a CC305 or Hot Cam ?

Yes 12.17, with slow runs of 12.40 and no head work (the heads haven't been off)! Basically, with the Hot Cam & LT4 springs, 1.6s, PCMforLess tuning, Kooks w/ dual-open collectors, Vigilante 3200, 3.73s and 26" MT ET Streets and some suspension work (w/ 1.67 60fts).

My 1997 Z28 ran really strong with this setup last fall thru the first of this season. However, the bottom end didn't hold up and I spun a rod bearing recently (ouch). While the bottom-end was stock, it was also low miles so I though it could handle the HP I was making. But it didn't! I was #1 in the points at one track and tied for #2 at another track and had won two events (No-E Street) this year. I'm pretty bummed-out now with the spun rod bearing and my Z28 out of action.

So, I've got a Golen stroker on order now, however, it will be several weeks before I get my Z28 back together and running again (maybe mid July). It takes a lot of time to get all the small parts lined-up (new Moroso F-Body oil pan, new injectors, flywheel, new cam, Etc.).

The cam, gears and stall converter are probably the three most important components and must be "correctly matched" to each other to go fast in the 1/4. Yes, you also need the basics as well (headers, PCM programming, low restriction air intake, traction, Etc.). Your 3.42 gears will be OK if you stay with low-profile slicks (26" tall). The correct stall converter can improve your ET by as-much-as 5 tenths (.5 seconds) and I recommend the Vigilante 3200. I really like the Hot Cam for a near stock LT 350, however, the strokers need a much larger cam.
