Re: Accel Opti Arrived! Pics inside.

I have one and it works. Here are some of my pictures. Here's a cutnpaste of my review from fbody.com:

Well, it works. But, when I received it I took it apart (out of suspicion and curiosity) and found a couple of things that will not make me a repeat buyer or the Accel optispark.
1) Metal sheild incorrectly made. The little tab that is near the elec. connector is bent in the wrong spot. I put my old stock sheild in.

2) This crappy shield caused something to make a little plastic shaving that could ruin your day if it fell into the sensor. Removed shaving.

3) A scratch on the cap and it's a painted OEM one or VERY similar to it. It also smelled like a cheap air tool from Harbor Freight and there were fingerprints on the optical wheel.

However the rotor has an extra rivet in it and it's black plastic instead of white, as if that matters. It does have a 1 year warranty and if it does go bad then I will try to get an OEM one as a replacement or go MSD.

Does anyone know if GMpartsdirect, Summit or Jegs offer a warranty on the OEM opti? If they do then I would recommend that route HIGHLY.

BTW I paid $299 for mine from Summit so JCW looks like a better deal!

I do like the way it was packaged with the protective foam. My ac-delco came in the mail rattling around in box with a broken connector!

I find the bushing/bearing debate interesting since on the other end of the engine we seem to like pilot bushings rather than pilot bearings, and that bushing would take more of a beating than the opti bushing.

Re: Accel Opti Arrived! Pics inside.

well, that kept people quiet for a while, lol.

How about just a accel cap and rotor on a AC opti since there are a lot of cap/rotor problems? I was thinking of going that route.

How IS the accel doing??

I had not seen this post before, thanks to those who put up pics.

On the bushing thing I have to wonder how much load is on the bushing I would think as much slides into the cam there is a decent amount of support there.

Re: Accel Opti Arrived! Pics inside.

Not exactly on topic, but I had re-occuring opti explosion problems. I took a stock GM opti and drilled out the plastic holding the rotor contact on and riveted it on with aluminum rivets. I also ground the ribbing down smooth on the underside of the cap thinking that the rotor may be making contact with it and breaking.

This was last year, and I have plenty of 7k +rpm datalogs (a few at 7,350), and about 5k street miles including a 2k mile round trip to north carolina and back. So far I have had no problems with it.

Is it possible you are getting water in through the MAF? I find it hard to believe w/ the opti tucked in to the engine it would have any problems w/ any indirect moisture such as a rain storm.

The stumble issue ended up being crappy elitesparkplugs.com wires. They either started to fall apart or started inexplicably arcing. I found this out when I went to replace the opti.

At first I had one damaged wire... which was replaced with the opti, and eventually with time, the rest of the wires degraded to crap. I got those wires back when they were "the hot thing" and never had a problem until a year later. I'm glad everyone knows to stay away from that product now.

I did go ahead and replace the opti though since it had over 100k on it. I'm now runnign MSD wires and couldnt be happier.

I put 3000 miles on it with the stock cam, and about 1000 so far after my cam swap. My car is a daily driver... but this summer its been everywhere from Raleigh, NC up to Vermont and back, and to Baltimore numerous times so I've managed to put quite a few miles on it.

I have no complaints. I've put it through rain and sunshine. I kinda wish I had taken it apart when I got it so I could have made note of the internal's conditions.

So what are the actual rpm pull limits for the OEM, Accell, and MSD?

Right now, my decision is coming down btwn the Accell and MSD but I don't want rpm limits to be an issue.

I'm glad I reread this thread and saw that Steve got the Accell for cheap at JC.

I have an Accel opti and it is near bone identical to the GM.
The Accel does have the bushing that wont rust instead of the ball bearing. It has a polished housing for more corrosion resistance. It has a better rotor and cap from what I can tell.

The segmented wheel is the same and the sensor is the same but not made by Mitsubishi like the GM. The first accel I had might have been a defect, the segmented wheel was hitting the sensor and they swapped it out for one that was much better. I personally don't see anything really bad about the Accel and mine will go on soon.

Holy rusted thread!

On a serious note. Some people have had good experiences, heres mine. My accell opti made it maybe 3 months and 3k miles. The rotor was touching and cutting into the cap.

My dowel pin is the correct length and goes @ 2/3 into the opti. I can get pics showing the wear marks.

Sticking with GM.
