Maybe we should all donate $5 to a "fund," and use it to buy one of these for the purpose of cracking it open and comparing/contrasting the parts in it against the parts in a stock Opti.

is it possible it could not be as good as OEM? Im not exactly looking for something better (because that would probably cost a fortune) but what are some good replacements for OEM as of now?

The MSD unit is another alternative. Apparently it has some improvements. Also more expensive.

Besides the OEM unit, for just straitup optispark replacement, to my knowledge there is:

The Accel, the one I pictured. $299 at summit, but only $199 at JC Whitney for some odd reason. Oil lite bushings, "upgraded case" supposedly stronger than the stock unit. Not much word out there on reliability yet.

The Summit optispark which advertises the same upgrades the Accel does, and is probably the exact same unit. It sells for $249 at Summit Racing.

The MSD unit which sells somewher around $500 if I remember correctly. I believe it allows you to adjust timing 5 degrees advanced or retarded. It runs about $550.

Then there's the dyna-spark unit which has a number of upgrades and is really pricey. I have no idea what the price on one of those is right now, but I imagine its up there with MSD's unit.

The king of optisparks, the dyna-spark is only advertised to be reliable up to 6800rpm. I doubt the Accel for 1/3rd the price can handle that kind of performance.

If i remember correctly MSD is boasting 10,000 rpm for their opti spark, with a redisigned optical pickup that has the ability to go +-5 degrees on the timing. It also has a billet housing which is nice.

If that's the case, whenever my opti goes I'll probably go for one

yeah i wouldn't buy an opti with a bushing in it. I want a bearing in my opti especially for the for the price the command.

I have run nothing but ACCEL ignition parts on my Nova and other "low tech" cars for years with no problems whatsoever

Re: Accel Opti Arrived! Pics inside.

We just got one in at work and put one on a customers car.

It seemed to spin more freely and smoothly than a new GM opti. Plus 1.
It had a better case. Plus 2
It was cheaper than OEM. Plus 3
The connector on it had some plastic molding in the way that had to be ground away. Not sure if it was just a one time defect, or something we should get used to. Minus 1.

Final score = Plus 2. We will be buying and using these again.

I agree , I rev my 383 LT1 at the track to 7000 (on factory tach) sounds like nothing else.

Hearing this makes me consider the accell opti alot more than I did...I figured it would just be a gm opti with an "accell" sticker on it...
