? about nitrous piston (thickness of the piston)

ok ive got 2 part #s one je pistons and one ross, both are at www.flatlanderracing.com, and both are nitrous pistons.

je 173583 rign land depth is .250

ross 90465 and the ring land depth is .300, which is better right.

my question is, is it the depth of the ring land that makes a nitous piston or is it the thickness of the piston (i mean the center), if so how can you find what that is.

or is the depth of the ring land how thick the pistion is all the way accross the top

thanks for the help

No... unfortunately you can't tell the crown thickness by looking at the ring placement. If you want some piece of mind, I can tell you that I have, and know people who have, run 300+ hp nitrous systems on your typical "nitrous" piston with top ring placement .250-.300 from the crown.

If you're planning to run 150hp or so... I wouldn't even worry about a nitrous-specific piston. If more... then you're looking in the right place.

It is rare that you will see a piston top blown out. Does happen but usually only when something went wrong and in that situation, no amount of thickness is going to save you. If it aint the crown, it's the ringland..... something's gotta go.

well the engine is going to be right at 450 rwhp and i would like to spray a 200 maybe 250 so do you think the ross is the better choice, but i also dont know the difference in materail between the 2.

There are a number of good ones. I have had a lot of experience with JE and have never been disappointed. I wrote some tech notes on this subject whoich you can read at http://www.kennedysdynotune.com Click on "Tech" and go to "Motor Tech".

Re: ? about nitrous piston (thickness of the piston)

well i dont rebuild my motors every year like you rich guys (kidding) so i just wont this engine to take anyhting i can through at, and i want the best pistons for the application, and maybe just alittle over kill. i dont want any problems.

what should a good nitrous piston be made of. becuase im going to to call je and ross tommorow and find out what there made of. to see if one has better material than the other

Most of your quality nitrous pistons will be 2618 alloy.

An article you might learn a bit more from...
