97SS planning to run 9s. Cant tune! Going carburated! What troubles will I face?
This post is for a cousin of mine. He is located in an area that has no dyno machines, no lt1 edit..nothing.
Car: 97 Camaro SS automatic with 342s (For drag race use ONLY)
Current Mods: removed paper filter the rest is stock with some weight reduction mods and with a nitrous wet kit 175shot and slicks. Best run 11.9@112mph on a 1.6X 60ft
Mods being delivered:
Callies 382/383? stroker kit with forged pistons
AFR 220 (looking for a cam)
1 7/8th headers
Again, car not intended for street use. He is wanting to run 9s and cant have any access to tuning. He knows it will take a big nitrous shot (possibly 300) to run 9s and the only way to bypass the tuning route is to go carburated. What are some troubles that he will have to face? I heard he should expect messy wiring issues.. but what else? Links would be nice.
TIA

Re: 97SS planning to run 9s. Cant tune! Going carburated! What troubles will I face?
Man it won't take 300Hp n2o to go 9's in a properly setup car. I used a tune off of the internet to start with and tweaked a little myself to run 10.20's@132mph with only a 355" LT1 and 175HP n2o so it would be rather easy with a 383 and about 225HP n2o. I am still on the stock rear and don't leave on the n2o. That alone would get me into the low 10's to high 9's just leaving on 175HP. I say look on the computer and learn a little then tune it yourself. If he were trying to do it N/A he would be in a bind but with n2o he can control timing and fuel manually so thats half the battle. Either way good luck but I say keep the EFI. Later Clint

If his only reason for going carb is that no one local can tune it, i would look into mail order tuning.
PCM4less and Madz28 are both site sponsors, and have gotten great results for many people. If he has access to a laptop with scanning software he can send in datalogs and they can tune from there.
But if he is bent on going carb there is alot of info on the site, just do a few searches.

Re: 97SS planning to run 9s. Cant tune! Going carburated! What troubles will I face?
i dunno, maybe its just me, but if I was going to drop that much money on parts and everything I would also spend a few bucks on a mail order tune and then drive somewhere for a dyno tune. Unless he lives in Afghanistan he cant be THAT far away from someone who does tuning. He could also use a cheap <$150 laptop and buy the software needed to tune himself and spend a weekend doing that rather then butchering a car up for what I see as a really stupid reason.
LT1s have been around FOREVER, everything but the wildest combos are very easy to get "close" via a mail order tune. His setup doesnt look very exotic and Id be willing to be hed be fine with a mail order tune for a while until he could find time to take a roadtrip somewhere to dial it in.
*edit*
this also isnt advanced tech, so a mod should move this to lt1 tech please.

he's going to have to do something about all of the guages... if he goes carbed then none of the stock guages will work and hell going to have to go aftermarket.

Ed Wright would be FastChip in Tulsa, OK. There website is www.fastchip.com and all there contact info is on the page. FastChip tuned my car and I have been VERY pleased with the results. Also, if he later changes his setup, then updates on the computer are only like $150.

oops I guess i didnt specify that... the stock guages arent very accurate and since he wants to build a strip car only hes better off going aftermarket for the sake that they are more accurate guages.

Does he realize he will have to either swap the tranny or buy an aftermarket controller for it $$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
Everyone is scared of the computer but if he would just swap back to OBD1 tuning becomes cheap like do it yourself with a $100 laptop, $90 Tunercat, $90 datamaster, $65 cable, or skip the Tunercat and use the other stuff to log and load while sending info back and forth with Ion or Bryan the two tuners mentioned above.
