OBD-II does set codes for misfires. OBD-I does not.
Get the 97 scanned with a scanner that can access the "GM Enhanced Parameters". With that scanner, you can pull up the misfire count, by individual cylinder. That will tell you if its a single cylinder, cross-firing between two cylinders, a truely "random" misfire, etc. Its going to be a lot easier to find the problem if you know exactly which cylinder it is. The cost of a good scan will be less than throwing the cost of a new Opti at it.
