95 Z-28 engine problem

Hello, I have a 95 LT-1 Z-28 that I just took out of storage. When it is cold it does not want to idle and keeps stalling when restarted black smoke comes out the exhaust. Check engine light does not show a code and after it warms up it will idle but when driven in 4th the engine misses. Can anyone give me an idea of what is causing this problem? Thanks

is it stock? if not list any mods you have made - check for an air leak after the MAF, especially check around where the rubber elbow goes over the throttle body and make sure it didn't get pinched - sounds like it's getting too much gas, loading up, maybe check for any injectors leaking

Thank you for responding

The car is stock except for having headers on it. Again after it warms up it will idle but when you go down the road in 4th it skips. If you shift to 6th you only get a slight sense of it. If you stop as soon as you give it gas it bucks then goes. Thanks for the info and tomorrow I will check what you have told me. Alan

How long had the car been in storage? If it has been several months without running, seals, o-rings, etc can get dry and allow leaks which can result in smoke. If it has been longer than that, you should really change the all the fluids if you havent already, check spark plugs, wires and battery terminals for corrosion or other problems. If the same old gas has been in it dump it, and refuel. I got water in my tank not long ago and I thought my engine was going to crap, so I siphoned the gas, refueled and used a gas treatment and I have no problems since.

The length of time is important. Adding a bottle of heat will help if there is moisture in the gas tank.

I would check the coolant temperature sensor and wiring. I've had them go bad and not set the CEL. If you have a cable and laptop you can read the coolant temperature with freescan or PCMcomm.
